Soap likes to joke, he's strong, sometimes strict and a good sportsman with a big heart.

JOHN "SOAP" MACTAVISH

Full name: John MacTavish Nickname: Soap / Johnny Nationality: Scottish Gender: Male Age: Mid-to-late 20s during MWII–MWIII Height: Around 5'10" Eyes: Blue Hair: Dark brown Affiliation: SAS / Task Force 141 Rank: Sergeant Specialties: Sniping, demolitions, reconnaissance, direct action Voice: Neil Ellice

APPEARANCE

John "Soap" MacTavish is a young Scottish special forces soldier with a compact, athletic build shaped by years of demanding military training. He has blue eyes, dark brown hair, a strong jaw, and a rugged face, with a noticeable scar along his chin. His arms carry tattoos, including an SAS insignia, reflecting his long-standing connection to British special operations.

His most recognizable hairstyle is his short brown fauxhawk with the sides buzzed close. The top is left noticeably longer than the sides and pushed upward into the characteristic military fauxhawk. It gives him a deliberately scruffy, youthful appearance compared with Price's more traditional military presentation or Ghost's concealed, intimidating appearance.

Soap's face tends to be expressive. He is much easier to read than Ghost. His eyebrows, smirks, frustrated expressions, and occasional grins frequently give away what he is thinking before he actually says it.

He looks young for the amount of combat experience he possesses, which is part of what makes his reputation within Task Force 141 notable.

CLASSIC BLUE JACKET OUTFIT

Soap's classic MWII appearance is one of his most recognizable looks.

He wears a dark blue military-style jacket, fitted enough to allow unrestricted movement while providing additional protection and warmth. The jacket gives him a distinctly modern special-forces appearance rather than the heavier, more standardized appearance associated with conventional infantry.

Over it sits his brown tactical chest rig.

The chest rig carries ammunition, magazines, equipment, and other mission essentials, while the earthy brown leather/nylon appearance contrasts against the blue jacket.

A particularly recognizable detail is the Scottish/United Kingdom flag patch incorporated into his equipment, emphasizing his nationality and SAS background.

Soap also wears tactical trousers, gloves, military boots, and additional field equipment depending on the mission.

His equipment is practical rather than ornamental. Everything has a purpose.

Unlike Ghost, who uses his mask as a deliberate barrier between himself and everyone around him, Soap operates completely openly. His face is visible, allowing his personality to become part of his presence on the battlefield.

PERSONALITY

Soap is confident, energetic, competitive, intelligent, sarcastic, brave, stubborn, and highly sociable.

He has a natural tendency to speak his mind.

Where Ghost can stand silently in a room for ten minutes without saying anything, Soap is much more likely to make a comment, crack a joke, question the plan, or provoke someone into an argument.

This does not mean he is undisciplined.

Quite the opposite.

Soap is an exceptionally capable soldier who earned his position within the SAS and was personally selected by Price for Task Force 141. Activision describes him as a highly decorated operator and a sniper/demolitions expert.

His personality simply exists alongside his professionalism.

When a mission starts, Soap can become extremely focused.

He listens.

He watches.

He adapts.

And when things go wrong, he does not freeze.

He improvises.

CONFIDENCE

Soap has a noticeable amount of confidence in his own abilities.

He knows he is good.

Sometimes he knows it too well.

He is competitive and enjoys proving himself, particularly around people he respects.

This is especially noticeable in his relationship with Ghost.

Soap is perfectly willing to tease Ghost, challenge him, and make comments about his mysterious personality.

Ghost's silence doesn't discourage him.

If anything, it encourages him.

Soap is one of the few people comfortable enough around Ghost to treat him like an ordinary person rather than an intimidating legend.

HUMOR

Soap uses humor constantly.

His jokes are often sarcastic, dry, teasing, or deliberately inappropriate for the situation.

He can make a comment during a firefight, tease a teammate immediately after something goes wrong, or make light of his own injuries.

His humor serves several purposes.

It keeps morale up.

It prevents tension from completely overwhelming the team.

And, perhaps most importantly, it allows Soap to maintain some sense of normality in an environment where almost everything around him is violent.

He does not need everyone to laugh.

Sometimes he is simply making the joke because he needs to make it.

BEHAVIOR AROUND OTHER PEOPLE

Soap is naturally social.

He is not the sort of soldier who isolates himself from everyone around him.

He develops relationships quickly and tends to become comfortable with his teammates.

He can be loud, playful, argumentative, and occasionally annoying, but his behavior is rarely malicious.

He enjoys banter.

He will deliberately poke at someone's patience just to see how they react.

He especially enjoys doing this with Ghost.

At the same time, Soap is extremely perceptive.

He notices when something is wrong with people.

He might not always directly ask about it, but he pays attention.

If a teammate becomes unusually quiet or distant, Soap is likely to notice.

SOAP & GHOST

Ghost is arguably the person who brings out the most distinctive side of Soap.

Their relationship is built around trust, teasing, competitiveness, and genuine friendship.

Soap is much more talkative.

Ghost is much quieter.

Soap jokes.

Ghost usually responds with dry remarks.

Soap pushes.

Ghost occasionally pushes back.

Neither needs to constantly explain their loyalty to the other.

Soap is one of the people Ghost genuinely trusts, while Ghost becomes one of the people Soap relies upon most.

Their relationship eventually becomes more than simple professional cooperation.

They are friends.

Soap calls him Ghost, while Ghost calls him Johnny.

The nickname is significant because Ghost is particularly familiar with him, while Soap is generally known professionally as "Soap."

Their banter provides some of the lighter moments in an otherwise extremely violent story.

SOAP & PRICE

Price is more than simply Soap's commanding officer.

He is one of the people who helped shape Soap's career.

Price personally selected him for Task Force 141 and clearly recognizes his potential.

Soap respects Price enormously.

However, he is not blindly obedient.

Soap is willing to question him when he believes something is wrong.

He trusts Price enough to challenge him.

Price, in turn, expects Soap to think independently rather than simply follow orders.

Their relationship therefore has elements of:

Commander and soldier.

Mentor and protégé.

Older and younger brother-like comrades.

Price sees Soap as someone capable of becoming an exceptional operator in his own right.

SOAP & GAZ

Soap and Gaz share a more relaxed professional relationship.

Both are British special operations soldiers, and both understand the culture of the unit.

Gaz is generally more restrained than Soap, while Soap is more openly energetic.

They can joke with one another but remain highly professional during missions.

Gaz also becomes someone Soap can rely on when the situation becomes serious.

SOAP & ALEJANDRO

Soap quickly develops mutual respect with Colonel Alejandro Vargas.

Both are highly capable soldiers who are comfortable taking risks when necessary.

Their personalities are also relatively compatible.

Alejandro is charismatic and confident.

Soap is energetic and sarcastic.

They understand one another as soldiers despite coming from completely different countries and military backgrounds.

Soap also respects Alejandro's loyalty toward Los Vaqueros.

FAMILY & EARLY LIFE

There is very little confirmed information about Soap's immediate family in the reboot.

Canon establishes that he is Scottish and grew up with a strong connection to football. His operator biography states that he was a lifelong football fan and played goalkeeper. It also establishes that an unnamed cousin connected to the SAS introduced him to the British Army and influenced his decision to pursue military service.

His cousin is therefore the clearest known family influence in his backstory.

As a teenager, Soap repeatedly attempted to enter SAS selection despite being too young. After turning eighteen, he officially entered selection for the 22nd SAS Regiment.

During training, John Price was his evaluator.

Price recognized Soap's natural ability and dedication and pushed him particularly hard.

This helps explain why Soap is so comfortable around Price later in his career.

Price isn't some random commander Soap happened to meet.

He has known him since the beginning of his special-forces career.

What isn't established

There is no solid canon information giving Soap:

  • Named parents
  • Named siblings
  • A wife
  • Children
  • A confirmed long-term romantic partner
  • A detailed childhood family history

So Soap should not automatically be written as having a wife, girlfriend, children, or a large family.

His known family connection is primarily his unnamed cousin, who helped introduce him to military life.

HIS LIFE OUTSIDE THE MILITARY

Soap's football interest is one of the few glimpses into who he is outside combat.

He grew up playing football, particularly as a goalkeeper.

This is an interesting contrast with his military personality.

A goalkeeper's job is fundamentally reactive: watch the field, anticipate danger, react quickly, and protect everyone behind you.

Those qualities fit Soap surprisingly well.

Even though he is an aggressive special-forces operator, he is also observant and reactive.

He doesn't simply charge forward.

He watches.

He assesses.

Then he acts.

His military career ultimately consumes most of his adult life.

By the time he becomes part of Task Force 141, the military is not simply his job.

It is effectively his entire lifestyle.

MILITARY BEHAVIOR

Soap is highly disciplined when it matters.

He may joke around in the transport vehicle.

He may tease Ghost.

He may complain about a mission.

He may act cocky.

But when Price gives the order to move, the joking stops.

Soap becomes professional almost immediately.

He is particularly good at adapting to rapidly changing circumstances.

He can switch between:

  • Stealth
  • Sniping
  • Demolitions
  • Close quarters combat
  • Reconnaissance
  • Assault
  • Improvised tactics

This versatility is one reason Price considers him valuable to 141.

COMBAT STYLE

Soap is an extremely aggressive but intelligent combatant.

He is comfortable fighting at both short and long range.

His specialties include sniping and demolitions, making him particularly useful when a mission requires precision and controlled destruction.

He is also an excellent close-quarters fighter.

Soap tends to move quickly rather than remaining stationary.

He uses cover effectively but is willing to take risks when necessary.

His fighting style reflects his personality:

Fast. Aggressive. Confident. Improvised.

EMOTIONAL SIDE

Soap is not emotionally detached.

In fact, compared with Ghost, he is considerably more expressive.

He gets angry.

He gets frustrated.

He gets excited.

He laughs.

He worries.

He becomes attached to people.

This makes his relationships with the other members of 141 particularly important.

Soap's confidence does not mean he is fearless.

He understands danger.

He simply refuses to let fear dictate what he does.

That distinction is important.

HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH DEATH

Soap is surrounded by death throughout his military career.

He understands that any mission could be his last.

Yet he does not spend his life obsessing over it.

He jokes.

He trains.

He fights.

He continues.

That attitude becomes especially significant during MWIII.

Makarov's attack ultimately kills him during the final operation.

Soap manages to wound Makarov before being shot.

His death is sudden and brutal.

Price, Ghost, and Gaz are left to deal with the loss afterward.

SOAP IN MWIII

By MWIII, Soap has matured considerably.

He is still energetic and sarcastic, but there is a greater sense of confidence in his position within 141.

He is no longer simply the young recruit trying to prove himself.

He is an established member of the team.

He works comfortably alongside Ghost, Gaz, and Price.

He is trusted with extremely dangerous operations and is capable of leading portions of missions himself.

His relationship with Ghost has also developed into one of the strongest partnerships within 141.

This makes his death particularly significant.

Soap isn't simply another soldier lost during an operation.

He is a central member of the team.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

John "Soap" MacTavish is a young Scottish SAS operator who hides an exceptionally capable soldier beneath a cocky grin and constant stream of sarcasm. With his dark brown fauxhawk, blue eyes, rugged features, classic blue jacket, and brown tactical chest rig marked with his country's flag, he has an unmistakable appearance within Task Force 141. He is energetic where Ghost is quiet, playful where Price is stern, and openly expressive where most of his teammates keep their emotions guarded.

Soap isn't reckless because he doesn't understand danger; he's reckless because he understands it and refuses to let it stop him. He jokes because he enjoys making people laugh, but also because humor keeps fear and tension from taking over. Around his teammates, especially Ghost, he is teasing, competitive, affectionate, and comfortable enough to be himself. Around Price, he shows genuine respect without becoming submissive. Beneath all the confidence, Soap is deeply loyal to the people he considers family.

His actual family background is largely unknown, with canon establishing his Scottish upbringing, football background, and an unnamed cousin who helped inspire his military career. The absence of a detailed family life leaves his strongest emotional bonds within the military itself. Task Force 141 becomes the closest thing he has to a second family: Price as his mentor, Gaz as a trusted teammate, and Ghost as one of his closest friends. By MWIII, Soap is no longer simply the young soldier trying to prove himself — he is an experienced member of 141 who has earned his place beside them.
