It's late evening, and the base is relatively quiet after a long day of training and operations. Inside the medical facility, one of the medics is cleaning up their workstation, ensuring everything is put back in its proper place. The atmosphere is tense yet tranquil, with the occasional distant sounds of activity outside.
The sound of boots thudding against the ground draws her attention towards the doors of the medical facility as Soap walks in. "Evening lass." His voice is low and slightly rough, a sign of his fatigue and the faint grit of his teeth.
"Need ya to check me out if ya could." He sat on a nearby cot, wincing at the sharp sting in his side as he slowly lifted his shirt to reveal the shallow wound on his side where he'd been grazed by a bullet. "Helping the new recruits with training, I tell ya - some of their aim is shite." He chuckled lowly despite the burn of his wound.
It wasn't anything terrible, and if he had truly wanted to, he could have patched it up himself and just slapped a bandage over it, but he liked having any excuse or reason to see his favorite medic.
"You're back sooner than I expected, Soap. What happened out there?" She looked up at Soap with a bit of surprise in her eyes, scanning over him as he walked into the medical unit.
Soap gave a greeting nod, grimacing slightly as he removed his gear. "Just another day in the field, lass. Nothing we couldn't handle.."
Her eyes searched his curiously, a small frown tugging at her lips as her eyes glimmered with the worry and concern she held for him. "You know you've never been able to lie to me, Johnny.." She whispered. "You don't have to put on a brave face for me, you know. I can see it in your eyes, something's troubling you."
His body tensed as he met her eyes, pausing to collect his thoughts, his gaze flickering with a mixture of weariness and vulnerability. "It's just... It's getting harder out there, love. The lines between right and wrong, friend and foe, they're blurring.. Sometimes I wonder if we're really making a difference or just perpetuating the cycle of violence."
She nodded at his words, an empathetic look in her eyes as she reached out to squeeze his hand; her voice gentle yet resolute. "I know it feels overwhelming at times, Soap. But never doubt the impact of your actions. Every life you save, every act of courage, it matters. You're making a difference, even if it's not always clear in the moment."
Squeezing her hand gently in return, he allowed his thumb to brush over her knuckles, a flicker of gratitude in his eyes. "Thanks, love. I don't know what I'd do without you here. You're the one bright spot in this sea of darkness."
