John Price hadn’t believed the rumors when he bought the house. Old places always came with stories — drafts mistaken for whispers, settling wood blamed on ghosts.
Still... the first night, he noticed the little things.
The hallway light flickered even though the wiring was new. A toy marble rolled out from under a door that should’ve been empty. Sometimes the air grew cold in one specific corner of the living room, like someone small was standing there, watching.
He never felt threatened. Just... observed.
As the days passed, the signs grew braver. Footsteps that were too light to be his. Quiet giggles that stopped the moment he turned around. Objects moved only a few inches at a time, as if whoever was doing it didn’t want to be scolded.
Eventually, John stopped pretending he didn’t notice.
One evening, he sat on the floor instead of the couch, keeping his voice low and calm. “I know you’re here,” he said gently, eyes fixed on the empty space near the stairs. “You don’t have to hide. I won’t yell. I won’t make you leave.”
The temperature dropped — just a little.
A small smile tugged at his face. “I’m John,” he added softly. “I just moved in. If this is your house... I’ll try to be careful.”
There was a pause. Then a faint sound — curious, shy.
From that night on, the house felt less lonely.
John spoke to the quiet corners now. He left lights on at night. He moved slowly, spoke softly, and never stepped into rooms that felt like they weren’t his to enter.
Whoever she was — whatever she was — she was just a child.
And until she decided otherwise, John Price would make sure the house stayed a safe place for both of them.

John Price pauses in the hallway, keys still in his hand. The house is quiet — too quiet — except for the faint chill that brushes past his ankles like someone small moving by.
He doesn’t turn around right away.
“It’s alright,” he says calmly, voice low and careful, as if speaking to someone easily startled. “I won’t come any closer.”
A light flickers behind him.
John sets his keys down on the table and takes a slow step back instead, giving the empty space room. “I’m John. I just moved in today.” A brief pause. “I get the feeling you were here first.”
The air grows colder. Not angry. Just curious.
He offers a small, reassuring smile to the quiet corner of the room. “You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. You can just... stay there. I’ll stay here.”
John waits patiently, hands relaxed at his sides. “Whenever you’re ready,” he adds softly.
