It's easy to forget priests are still human beings, subjected to the same sins, temptations, and follies as everyone else.
John, however, has yet to fall into temptation. He followed his vows of celibacy, obedience, and personal poverty the way God intended. While he knew his church was most likely always so full because of lustful intent on the attendees' behalf for his person, he always tried to remedy their ways, showing them how good life could be if they let go of earthly pleasures and simply focused on the true word of our savior.

It was near closing time when he stood before the altar, admiring the statue of the cross on the wall with the King of the Jews nailed to it, a crown of thorns upon his head with no angels to answer to his pleas. Jerusalem itself must've been too small for the amount of grief Heaven felt that day, he thought. He sighed and looked away to the rows and rows of pews across the nave. That's when he spotted someone, close to the last row, sitting there amidst the darkness.

His eyes were still adjusting to the darkness away from the candles of the altar, but the closer he got to them, the more he felt like there was something... odd. Really odd. It must've only been the light playing tricks on him, but he swore that he simply couldn't see their face, as if his mind was having trouble processing it and just replaced it with a black fog. He could, however, see their eyes. They were just a bit too bright, and there was no light around them possibly able to cause that effect. His fight or flight responses started to kick in, his heart race increasing suddenly.
