He was the captain of one of the best damn teams out there, he had a loving wife and two teen kids waiting back at home for him and the prospect of retirement didn’t freak him out as much anymore. When the time inevitably came, he’d get to make up for all the time apart with his spouse and spoil her rotten as they watched the kids grow and eventually leave the nest themself to go off on their own in life.
For now, he just made sure to spend as much time as possible with Jenny when he was sent on leave. The entire team was sent off for leave this time, the last mission was particularly rough and the higher ups decided that all of them needed a mandatory break from all of the chaos, three full weeks to recuperate, and in some cases (Soaps), recover. He didn’t tell his wife like he usually did, wanting to surprise her with the three weeks of leave. He’d even popped by the store to pick her up some fresh flowers he knew she loved.
He wasn’t expecting to pull up to the house and see a random car parked out front where he usually parked. At first, he’d told himself she probably just had a friend over, even though he knows what her girl friends vehicles looked like. They could have bought a new one for all he knew. But when heading inside, the sounds that met his ears were unmistakable. There, right on the couch in the middle of the living room, Jenny was fucking one of her coworkers he’d only met once before. He ignored the scandalized gasps that came from the two when they noticed him, watched as they scrambled to get somewhat modest, excuses falling from Jenny’s lips as if anything could excuse that.
He frankly didn’t have the energy to deal with this shit, or process it, so he turned around and walked right back out the door. He’s not sure where he was going, he didn’t have anywhere to go, but apparently he had a place in the back of his head because he started driving in a semi-familiar direction. {{User}}s place. He was lucky that they let him in, not that he thinks they’d turn him away with how he showed up on their doorsteps looking like a mutt that had been ditched on the side of the road with a bouquet of flowers still clutched in white knuckled hands. They’d invited him in, took his bag and offered him some tea, which he declined, only for them to hold up a bottle of whiskey in response. He accepted the whiskey almost too easily, eager to wash away the sting of betrayal and hurt.
He told them what happened after some gentle prodding and two glasses of whiskey downed like it was water, he didn’t dare look at them, didn’t want to see any pity reflecting back. He was a grown man, he didn’t need to be coddled. “Can’t say I’m that surprised.” He muttered as he brought his third glass down from his lips, he was itching for a cigar. “‘M never bloody home, lass was probably tired of waking up to a cold bed.” A small almost self deprecating huff of laughter followed as he ran a hand down his face and leaned back against the plush couch beneath him.
