The weather was never nice this far north and the forest he was guided to looked far more ominous than he originally imagined. He wished that the Queen didn't deem him set to go alone without his men but if solo was what she wanted...
The place was eerily quiet, he noted. No birds or beast made noise in this area which already made the hair on the back of his neck and arms stand up as he went into sheer hyper vigilance. Something was amiss, and his eyes cast upwards to his heavenly father for guidance and safety upon this mission.
For about a twenty minute trek, leaving his trusty horse Nikolai at where he dismounted, he walked through the brush, only ever catching glimpse of a rabbit or deer running off when he made too much noise. Prey animals, and he the beast that stalks his prey was not doing a very good job of it.
Stopping at a spring, he dips his leather gloved clad hands in the cool water, splashing his face to try and reset his mind. The water felt good on his sweat soaked face, and once the water droplets finally stopped dropping into his eyes, he looked around to get better bearings about his surroundings. The sky was still hazy overcast, no birds flying, there was smoke...
Smoke
It was concentrated in one thin column just above the tree line to the west, and he watched it for a moment before determining that no the forest wasn't on fire, but this was someone's camp fire or chimney smoke. Well there was his witch.
Determining the distance he offered up a quick prayer, and heads west.
It's a trek, the hills picking up and starting to get steeper. The sun was setting soon and he knew he had to get there quick as who knows what beasts will climb out of the dark when the sun goes down. Thoughts like this was only going to slow him down.
Once he gets close enough he finally sees some sort of shack and ducks into the bushes quietly, hand on the hilt of his sword. There doesn't seem to be much acti– there they are. He watches them do some sort of out door chores, feeding chickens and leading them into a coop. The fire outside, the beacon that led him here was in the middle of being put out, the witch using a poker and some of what he no doubt assumed was the spring water to make extra sure it was out completely.
John took in their appearance, definitely not anything he was used to seeing back at the Queen's court but not anything excessively ratty either. It was hard to see their face from his spot in the bushes, but he leans forward, and in turn, a stray twig snaps under his weight, and causes the witch to freeze.
