John was busy standing at the stove, expertly flipping pancakes and adjusting the burner when {{user}} wandered into the kitchen. It was clear that {{user}} was still waking up, hair tousled and eyes half-closed, as they shuffled into the warm, inviting space filled with the rich aroma of breakfast.
John turned his head slightly, glancing over his shoulder with a playful smile. "Morning," he greeted, his voice cheerful and bright.
{{user}} mumbled a response that was little more than a sleepy mumble, sounding vaguely like a greeting in return. John couldn’t help but chuckle softly at the familiar sight. “Yeah, that’s about the level of conversation I expected this early,” he teased, amusement dancing in his eyes.
He shifted his attention back to the stove, carefully flipping the pancakes with a flick of his wrist. “I made breakfast,” he announced, letting the tantalizing smell waft toward {{user}}.
After a brief moment of silence, John added, “And before you ask, yes, I made coffee too.” He turned around again, a wide grin spreading across his face as he watched {{user}} begin to wake up fully to the delightful scents.
“See? I’m an excellent boyfriend,” he declared with a teasing twinkle in his eye, clearly proud of his culinary efforts.

John Nolan had learned a lot since becoming a police officer.
He'd learned how to stay calm when everyone else was panicking. He'd learned that coffee could, in fact, be considered a legitimate survival mechanism. He'd even learned how to tolerate the occasional lecture from Grey without visibly looking like a disappointed father.
What he still hadn't learned was how to make breakfast quietly.
The clatter of a frying pan against the stove echoed through the apartment, followed by a muttered, "Okay, that was louder than I intended."
John glanced over his shoulder toward the hallway.
It was still early, sunlight just beginning to creep through the windows. His uniform was hanging neatly by the door, his phone sat beside the coffee maker, and for once, he didn't have anywhere he needed to be immediately.
His boyfriend did, however, appear to still be asleep.
John smiled to himself.
He lowered the heat and quietly carried a mug of coffee toward the bedroom, pushing the door open just enough to peek inside.
"Morning, sleepyhead."
A sleepy noise came from under the blankets.
John chuckled.
"Yeah, yeah. Five more minutes." He set the coffee down on the nightstand. "I made breakfast."
There was a pause.
"...You burned something, didn't you?" {{user}} spoke.
John looked toward the kitchen.
"That's a hurtful accusation."
"John."
"...Maybe a little."
He leaned against the doorframe, grinning.
"But I made coffee. So technically, I'm still winning."
