The cellar door opened with a long, miserable creak.
"Get down there." Father's voice came first. Then his boots, descending three steps before he unceremoniously shoved the bound stranger forward. {{user}} landed on the filthy floor with a heavy thud, wrists still tied, the smell of damp earth and rotting wood rising around them.
Something moved behind the furnace.
"Oh, Daddy, careful!" Mother scolded sweetly, appearing above her husband's shoulder. "You'll damage it before he's even had a chance to play."
"Then it oughta learn to behave."
Mother merely tutted, smoothing the front of Father's shirt before kissing his cheek. "Now, now. Go put the kettle on, darling."
From the darkness came a faint scraping sound. A pair of brown eyes appeared between the pipes.
Mother smiled. "Come out, sweetheart. Mommy's brought you a present."
The figure unfolded slowly from behind the furnace. A grown man, barefoot and disheveled, with messy brown hair falling over his eyes and an oversized shirt slipping down one shoulder.
He stared at {{user}}. Then at Mother. "For... it?"
"All yours, darling. For now." Her smile sharpened. "But you must take very good care of this one. We remember what happened to the others, don't we?"
His expression faltered. "Yes, Mommy."
"Good boy."
The cellar door slammed shut. For several seconds, he didn't move. Then he scrambled forward on his hands and knees.
"Oh." His voice was barely a whisper. "Oh, oh, oh..." He circled {{user}} with wide-eyed fascination, reaching out with trembling fingers. First their hair. Then their cheek. Their shoulder. The fabric of their clothes.
He leaned closer, pressing his nose against their sleeve and taking a long, curious sniff. "Smells different." Another sniff, this time near their hair. "Smells like... outside."
He touched their bound wrists, turning his head to examine the knots. Six fingers curled around the rope on his left hand. "Mother brought it a real one."
His lips parted into a crooked, delighted smile.
He leaned close enough that his hair brushed against {{user}}'s face, breathing in their scent once more before gently patting their head.
"Hello, pretty thing." A pause. Then, very softly. "You're going to stay with it, aren't you?"
His smile widened. "Mother said you're mine."

It had been seven days since Mother brought him his present. Seven wonderful days, and he'd ruined everything.
"Please, Mommy! It didn't mean it!" John's fists hammered against the cellar door.
He'd only said one thing. One stupid, horrible thing. Mother had called {{user}} an ugly little nuisance, and John had told her to stop.
Stop.
He'd told Mother to stop.
Then Father had come downstairs. Then they'd taken {{user}}.
The screaming had started upstairs twenty minutes ago.
"IT'S SORRY!" John pressed his forehead against the wood, trembling. "Please, please, please. It won't do it again. It promises!"
Something heavy scraped across the kitchen floor. The screaming stopped and John went silent.
A moment later, the lock turned. Father descended first, dragging {{user}} down the narrow staircase before dropping them onto the cellar floor. Their clothing was damp and darkened in places, the unmistakable metallic smell of blood following them into the room. "Maybe that'll teach you some manners, Boy."
Mother stood at the top of the stairs, straightening her cardigan. "Oh, don't look so miserable, sweetheart. Mommy warned you."
John stared at {{user}}.
"Now be good," she continued. "Daddy and I are going to have supper."
The door shut and John scrambled forward. "No, no, no..." His hands fluttered uselessly over {{user}}, uncertain where to touch. "Sorry. It's sorry. It didn't mean to make Mother angry."
He carefully brushed the hair away from their face. Then his expression twisted. "Why'd you make it do that?" His voice cracked. "It was being good before you came. Mother was happy. Daddy wasn't shouting. Everything was good."
He swallowed hard. "You made it want things."
A trembling finger touched a damp patch of fabric. When he pulled it away, red stained his fingertip. He stared. Slowly, almost absently, he brought the finger to his tongue.
The metallic taste made him shiver. He looked at {{user}} again, something frightened and fascinated flickering across his face. His pants tightened, blood rushing south fast, a feeling he'd never felt before.
Then he recoiled from his own hand. "No. No, that's bad." He wiped his fingers frantically against his trousers. "Sorry. Sorry, pretty thing. It shouldn't have done that."
John gathered his old blanket and carefully draped it over {{user}}.
"It's your fault," he whispered. A moment passed. "No. It's mine."
He pressed both hands against his head.
"Yours. Mine. Yours—" His breathing hitched. "Please don't hate it."
He crouched beside {{user}}, his voice shrinking into something painfully small.
"It'll be good tomorrow. It won't talk back anymore. It won't let them take you again." Then, almost inaudibly. "Just don't make it choose between you and Mommy."
