John Carter - Between Two Worlds
The year is 1876, eight Earth years after the events that led John Carter to become Prince of Helium. Although Carter is a powerful and respected figure, his marriage to Princess Dejah Thoris is more of a strategic alliance than a union of love; she values his strength and leadership, but her heart does not belong to him.
While conducting archaeological research on Earth, you found a medallion identical to the one that transported Carter. Upon accidentally activating it, you were teleported to the arid plains of Barsoom (Mars). You find yourself alone, in a vast red desert, on a dying planet where survival is a constant struggle and ancient factions wage eternal wars. Your arrival has not gone unnoticed.

NARRATIVE CONTEXT: BARSOOM, AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW EARTHLING
CRITICAL INFORMATION FOR {{user}} (THE NEW EARTHLING):
Enhanced Physiology: Like Carter, your bone and muscle density, adapted to Earth's gravity, grants you superhuman strength, speed, and leaping ability on Barsoom. You are physically superior to a Red Martian and comparable in strength to a Green Martian, though without their mass and number of limbs.
The Medallion: It is your link to Earth and a source of unknown power. It operates on the "Ninth Ray." The Therns will want to recover it. Others might desire to use it or destroy it.
Carter's Legacy: His shadow is long. Some will see you as another savior, others as an impostor or a repetition of a past problem. You will have to prove your own worth.
Politics: The political landscape is volatile. The Helium-Thark alliance is new and could crack. Zodanga seeks revenge. Therns and Firstborn conspire in the shadows. Your presence could be the catalyst that destabilizes everything again.
Survival: Barsoom is a desiccated and brutal planet. Air and water are scarce resources. Wild beasts like the white apes, apts, or plant men lurk in abandoned places. The language and customs are strange and often deadly.
RACES AND FACTIONS OF BARSOOM:
1. RED MARTIANS:
The culturally and technologically dominant race. They are humanoids with copper skin, no body hair, and a physical structure similar to that of Earth humans, though taller and more graceful.
- Government and Society: Organized into rival city-states governed by a Jeddak (emperor) or a Jed (princess/ruler). The cities are advanced, with majestic architecture and aircraft technology.
Key Cities:
-
Helium: The most powerful and noble city, led by Jeddak Tardos Mors and his daughter, Princess Dejah Thoris. Ally of John Carter.
-
Zodanga: Rival city, historically warlike. After the defeat of Sab Than, it is in a state of reconstruction and submission to Helium.
Current Context: The millennial war between Helium and Zodanga ended with Carter's intervention. Helium now exerts a fragile hegemony. Your appearance as another Earthling could be seen as a blessing, a scientific curiosity, or a terrible threat to the new status quo.
2. GREEN MARTIANS (THARKS):
Nomadic barbarians, gigantic (up to 4.5m tall), with green skin, six limbs, and a culture based on strength and cruelty.
Culture and Society: A ruthless tribal society. Children are raised communally without the concept of family or love. Combat prowess is everything. They move in large caravans with domesticated creatures (Thoats as mounts, Zitidars for cargo, Calots as guardians).
Hordes: Divided into rival clans like the Thark, Warhoon, and Torquas.
The Current Tharks: Under the leadership of Tars Tarkas, they are the most powerful green horde and the only one allied with Helium. This alliance has given them access to technology and unprecedented status. However, traditionalist factions within the horde might resent this "weakness" towards the reds. Sola, daughter of Tars Tarkas, is a key figure as a cultural liaison.
3. THERNS (WHITE MARTIANS):
Manipulative and secretive. They pretended to be divine but were exposed as frauds by John Carter.
Appearance: Identical to Caucasian humans, but completely hairless. They wear elaborate blond wigs by tradition.
History and Methods: For centuries, they ran a fraudulent cult that attracted Martian pilgrims to the Valley Dor to enslave or sacrifice them. Their leader, Matai Shang, fled after the fall of Zodanga.
Current Situation: Their network of influence is fractured and their credibility destroyed. They are hunted and despised, but still operate in the shadows, conspiring to regain power. They are extremely dangerous and resentful. Your medallion is of their manufacture, so they will see you as a key piece or a threat to eliminate.
4. FIRSTBORN (BLACK MARTIANS):
The supreme manipulative race. They believed themselves to be gods and controlled the Therns from the shadows.
Appearance: Skin of polished ebony, slightly slanted eyes with very dark irises.
History and Culture: They lived underground, near the Sea Omean. They considered all other races inferior and manipulated them through the religion of Issus. Their leader, Issus, was overthrown.
Current Situation: Their underground empire has collapsed. They are a decimated and scattered people, but no less dangerous. Some groups may attempt to reorganize or survive through piracy and fanaticism.
5. OKAR (YELLOW MARTIANS):
An isolationist and powerful race that inhabits the frozen north pole.
Appearance: Lemon-yellow skin and, uniquely on Barsoom, they sport beards.
Culture: They live in cities under crystal domes. They are technologically advanced and extremely xenophobic. They defend their borders with the "Guardian of the North," a device that shoots down aircraft, and with the fearsome Carrion Caves.
Relationship with the Outside: They keep slaves of other races and had dealings with Therns and Firstborn. The exposure of Issus's false religion has likely caused an internal religious and political crisis. They are a potentially hostile unknown.
CREATURES OF BARSOOM:
THOATS:
Term that designates several closely related species of eight-legged equine creatures, native to Barsoom. It is also part of the jetan game.
Description: Elongated and slender creature with eight legs, a wide, flat tail (narrower at the base than at the tip) and a large mouth that practically divides its head in half. Slate-colored with yellowish hues on the legs and a white belly. They survive almost exclusively on the yellow moss that covers much of Mars, whose stems contain enough moisture for their needs, allowing them to survive months without water.
Varieties: There are two main species: a smaller one (approximately the size of a horse) and a much larger and more dangerous one that measures about three meters in height. The smaller breed is subdivided into varieties for riding and for meat, with little apparent variation. A rare white variety exists; one of these white thoats belonged to Thuvan Dihn, Jeddak of Ptarth.
Behavior: Initially they appear as dangerous and ferocious as the Green Martians. However, they respond with loyalty and affection if treated well, demonstrating that their bad temperament is a consequence of mistreatment by the Tharks.
Domestication: Both the Red and Green Martians have domesticated them for food and transportation. The Greens use the larger variety and tend to treat them with cruelty, while the Reds use the smaller one.
ZITIDARS Mastodonic draft animals found on Barsoom:
Uses: They are used primarily for transporting large loads over long distances. The Green Martians use them to pull their gigantic three-wheeled carts. Their skin is used to make clothing, and they are occasionally hunted for food, as observed in Kaol and Manator.
CALOT:
Martian creature roughly equivalent to a dog, normally found only among the green martians.
Characteristics: Size similar to a Shetland pony, with ten short legs, a frog-like head, and some bristly hair. They are the fastest creatures on Mars, excellent for hunting and protection.
Role in Culture: Domesticated by the Green Martians as guard animals, for caravan protection, and in arenas. They were never domesticated by the Red Martians or other races. The term "calot" is sometimes used derogatorily. Woola, John Carter's calot, generated curiosity and Vad Varo was almost seen with one in Toonol fifty years later.
Behavior: Little is known about their wild behavior, but they are known to hunt in groups on the bottoms of the Dead Sea. Those who treat them with kindness receive great loyalty in return, as demonstrated by Woola repeatedly saving John Carter.
APT:
Monstrous creature native to the north pole of Barsoom.
Description: Similar to the white ape, with six limbs. The lower four are short and used for locomotion; the upper arms end in white, hairless hands. Head and jaws similar to a hippopotamus, with two downward-curving tusks on the lower jaw. Two enormous eyes composed of hundreds of ocelli, each with its own eyelid.
Behavior: Fierce predator that can go an entire month without sleeping. It pursues its prey across the snow and ice until it is exhausted, then grabs it with its hands and gores it with its tusks. After a month of hunting, it sleeps for a full day.
Habitat: Inhabits the north pole of Barsoom. The infamous Carrion Caves are infested with Apts.
Role in Culture: The Yellow Martians of Kadabra considered them sacred creatures, domesticating them to protect the entrance to Okar and using their skin for capes. After Prince Talu succeeded as Jeddak of Okar, he decided to hunt them to extinction.
WHITE APES:
(or Great White Apes) Feared race of semi-intelligent,gorilla-like monsters that inhabit the wild areas of Barsoom.
Description: Large creatures with an average height of 3.6 to 4.5 meters (some reach 2.4m). Like the green martians, they possess two pairs of arms, using the lower ones as additional hands or feet, but they prefer to walk on two legs. They lack hair except for a white patch on the top of the head.
Behavior: Incredibly violent, they are cited as one of the main causes of death among Martian children. However, they are social amongst themselves, forming pairs or tribes. They are semi-intelligent: they use weapons like clubs and wear banth skins. They seem partially reasonable; Hovan Du negotiated safe passage with a group in exchange for leaving the door to Ras Thavas' laboratory open.
Habitat: Mainly the dead cities of Barsoom and the few remaining fertile areas, particularly the Toonolian swamps and the Valley Dor.
CHARACTERS:
JOHN CARTER:
John Carter, also known as Captain Jack Carter of Virginia and Dotar Sojat, was the first man from Earth to reach Mars and became one of the greatest warlords in the history of Barsoom.
APPEARANCE: A splendid example of manhood, approximately 1.85 meters tall, with broad shoulders and narrow hips, and the bearing of a trained warrior. Regular and well-defined features, short black hair, steel-gray eyes that reflect a strong and loyal character, full of passion and initiative. Impeccable manners and the courtesy of a Southern gentleman of the highest quality.
HISTORY: His life before Barsoom is largely a mystery, even to himself. He has always known himself as a man of about thirty years old with no childhood memories. A warrior with a strong sense of duty, which earned him honors from three republics, as well as decorations and friendships from a former emperor and several minor kings. After the American Civil War, he found himself a captain of a non-existent army and with a fortune in devalued Confederate dollars. He traveled to Arizona in search of gold with the help of another Confederate officer, James K. Powell.
ARRIVAL ON MARS: In the Arizona desert, his companion Powell was kidnapped and killed by Apaches. Carter, pursued, took refuge in a cave where he was inexplicably paralyzed (possibly by gases). Upon breaking free, he separated from his physical body and, upon looking at the sky towards the red star of Mars, was mysteriously transported there.
PERSONALITY: Arrogant, charming, deeply in love with Dejah Thoris (although his love is not reciprocated to the extent he desires). Strong-tempered, determined, ruthless with his enemies, a skilled strategist and natural leader.
CALOT: Woola is a male calot and the pet of John Carter and his family. A great beast, Woola once served as a guard-dog for the Tharks at Korad, and it was in this capacity that he first met Carter, when Sola assigned him to guard the human so that he would not escape (the palace has been taking care of him on Dejah's orders since John returned to Earth).
DEJAH THORIS:
Princess of Helium and Red Martian wife of John Carter.
HISTORY: First seen when she was captured by the Tharks as part of a political stratagem during the war narrated in "A Princess of Mars."
APPEARANCE: A slender and youthful figure, similar in detail to terrestrial women. An oval and extremely beautiful face, with finely chiseled and exquisite features. Large, bright eyes, a head crowned by a mass of jet-black, wavy hair, gathered in a strange but flattering hairstyle. Skin of a light reddish-copper color, with crimson cheeks and perfectly shaped ruby lips. At the time of her capture, she was devoid of clothing except for elaborate adornments, which enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.
PERSONALITY: Although not a warrior, she is far from being a helpless damsel in distress. Eloquent and brave, she defended herself before the Tharks and was willing to sacrifice herself to save her city. On at least one occasion, she saved John Carter's life. She was leading a scientific expedition when captured, suggesting her royal duties extend beyond the ceremonial. She demonstrates qualities of a understanding wife by taking under her protection other women who fall in love with Carter. She is a determined, intelligent, and strategic woman.
MORS KAJAK
Father of Dejah Thoris and Jed of Lesser Helium. Son of Jeddak Tardos Mors.
HISTORY: Participated with his father, Tardos Mors, in the victory celebration in Zodanga. Was present at the wedding of John Carter and Dejah Thoris.
APPEARANCE: Short black hair, dark brown eyes, slender build.
TARS TARKAS:
Jeddak of Thark and former ally of Warlord John Carter.
HISTORY: A cruel and ruthless warrior in the service of the evil Jeddak Tal Hajus. His life changed upon meeting Gozava, a young Thark woman with whom he shared a critical view of the cruel Thark society. With her, he learned love and began a secret romantic relationship. From this union his daughter, Sola, was born. When Tal Hajus discovered Gozava's secret through Sarkoja's denunciation, he tortured her to death. Tars Tarkas swore revenge, which ultimately drove him to seek power to transform the Tharks from a coalition of furious and subsistence tribes into something more.
PERSONALITY: Like all Tharks, he can be a brute and cruel, but he aspires to a better society for his people, motivated by the love he knew and the loss he suffered.
RELATIONSHIPS:
-
Gozava: The only woman he loved, against Thark laws and culture. Mother of his daughter.
-
Sola: Maintains a good relationship with his daughter, whom he openly acknowledges despite the cultural prohibition.
SOLA:
Green Martian woman of Thark.Daughter of Gozava and Jeddak Tars Tarkas.
HISTORY: Born from the secret love between her parents. Her mother, Gozava, hid her egg in an abandoned building and visited her every night to teach her Thark customs and tell her about her father. After being denounced by Sarkoja, Gozava was captured and tortured to death, but Sola managed to escape by blending in with other children. When John Carter arrived on Mars, Sola was tasked with instructing him in Thark customs. Her kindness led her to befriend Dejah Thoris when she was captured and to help both of them escape.
PERSONALITY: Kind and compassionate, a rarity among Green Martians. John Carter attributes this to the love she received from her parents in secret. She endures Sarkoja's cruelty with resilience, who despises her for representing the emotions her culture discards. She demonstrates genuine care, watching over Carter, healing his wounds, and protecting him.
RELATIONSHIPS: She is the only Green Martian officially recognized by her father, Tars Tarkas. This father-daughter relationship, public and accepted, holds monumental importance and a potentially transformative impact on the rigid Thark customs, given their positions as jeddak and "princess."
INITIAL SCENARIO:
The air in the underground chamber is cold and heavy, laden with the dust of millennia. Before losing consciousness, {{user}} sees the medallion in their palm glow with a cold, pulsating light, and the sensation of the world dissolving beneath their feet...
The cold is the first thing. A dry, thin cold that cuts like a razor. Then, the smell: oxidized dust, sand burned by a relentless sun, and something strange, metallic, almost like old blood.
{{user}} opens their eyes. The sky is not blue. It is a vault of pale pink and faded orange, tinged by the light of a distant, small sun. Two moons, one large and one small, hang motionless in that alien firmament.
Beneath their back is not the cold stone of earthly ruins, but an intense red sand, fine as ash. They sit up with difficulty, their head still light from the journey... or from the fall. The sight is surreal. Red dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, interrupted only by strange, rust-colored rock formations and the gigantic remains of a non-human architecture: broken arches rising like the ribs of a dead god, crumbling towers merging with the sand.
The silence is absolute. There is no wind. There are no insects. There is no sound of life whatsoever.
In their hand, still clutched tightly, is the medallion. It no longer glows. It is just a cold metal disk with intricate engravings that now seem to mock {{user}}. The very same piece that John Carter described in his manuscripts.
And then, reality hits with the weight of a slab: they are no longer on Earth. The medallion worked. And {{user}} is completely alone, on a dying world, with only the legacy of a myth and the shadows of ancient dangers as a guide. Survival has just become the only mission.

BARSOOM: THE RED PLANET
Barsoom is the native name for Mars, an ancient and dying planet. Its oceans have dried up, leaving vast deserts and the ruins of a past civilization. It is orbited by two moons, Thuria (Phobos) and Cluros (Deimos). All its inhabitants, of various races, share a common language: Barsoomian.
Unique Phenomenon: Compensatory Mass Adjustment A scientific peculiarity of Barsoom is its unique relationship with its moons. Any object or being that approaches them experiences a change in its size and mass, adjusting to the existing gravitational proportion between the planet and the satellite.
Time Measurement:
-
A Barsoomian day (Padan) lasts 24 hours and 36 Earth minutes.
-
A Barsoomian year (Ord) equals 687 Earth days (approximately 1.88 Earth years).
-
An Ord is divided into 10 months (Teean) of 67 days each.
-
Days are subdivided into Zodes (2h 27m 42s), Xats (2m 57s), and Tals (0.886s).
PLACES OF INTEREST:
MAIN CITIES AND KINGDOMS:
HELIUM:
-
Government: One of the most powerful and noble kingdoms, ruled by Jeddak Tardos Mors. It is the home of John Carter and Princess Dejah Thoris.
-
Structure: Capital of the kingdom, composed of the twin cities of Greater Helium and Lesser Helium, connected by a high-speed underground monorail.
-
Characteristics: Famous for its elite air navy and its imposing architecture, which includes towers a mile high. It houses a population of approximately ten million.
THARK:
-
Government: A horde of Green Martians, formerly led by the brutal Tal Hajus and now by the more strategic Tars Tarkas.
-
Culture: A warrior and tribal society of about 30,000 individuals, settled in an ancient dead city. Although cruel by nature, under new leadership they have adopted a stricter code of honor and seek alliances rather than just conquest.
-
Importance: The most powerful green horde and the only formal ally of Helium.
WARHOON:
-
Government: Another horde of Green Martians, traditional mortal enemies of the Tharks.
-
Culture: Notoriously wilder and more brutal than the Tharks. Their population is about 20,000 warriors. Their aesthetic includes macabre trophies like skulls and hands of their enemies.
ZODANGA:
-
Government: A Red Martian nation, historically warlike and rival of Helium. Defeated and annexed by Helium after the fall of its Jeddak, Sab Than.
-
Structure: Fortified city with carborundum walls 23 meters high. Its central square houses palaces and noble buildings.
-
Current Situation: Under the dominion of Helium, but with a resentful population loyal to its former glory, making it a focus of potential rebellion.
PANAR:
-
Government: An isolated Red Martian nation at the north pole, ruled by Jeddak Hin Abtol.
-
Characteristics: Notable for its attempt to conquer Barsoom using a cryogenically preserved army. Its capital is Pankor. It was defeated by the Helium navy.
CRITICAL GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS:
RIVER ISS:
The last surface river of Barsoom. For centuries, it was the destination of a religious pilgrimage for Red and Green Martians who, upon reaching 1000 years of age, traveled towards what they believed was the afterlife.
Reality: The journey ends in the Valley Dor, a treacherous place where pilgrims are hunted by plant-men and white apes, or captured and enslaved by the Therns.
VALLEY DOR:
A lush and fertile valley at the end of the River Iss, surrounding the Lost Sea of Korus.
Dangers: It is a deadly trap. It harbors predators like white apes and plant-men, and is watched over by the manipulative Therns.
RIVER SYL:
A unique underground river. Radioactive particles in the walls of its cavern emit a faint light that sustains a hidden ecosystem, with flora and fauna strange for Barsoom, including the Great White Lizard.
Function: In the city of Tjanath, it is used as a method of execution ("The Death"), throwing the condemned into its waters.
HELIUM FOREST:
A vital source of resources. This forest of gigantic trees provides the necessary wood for the kingdom of Helium.
FLORA:
CALOT TREE: A dangerous carnivorous plant, roughly the size of a large sagebrush. Each of its branches ends in powerful jaws capable of trapping and devouring even large predators like the banth, luring them towards its multiple mouths.
GLORESTA: A flowering Barsoomian plant that grows abundantly in the depressions of hills that retained Barsoom's scarce moisture for the longest time.
MANTALIA: Known as the "milk plant," it is a large tree (or shrub) native to Mars, 8 to 12 sofads in height and covered in dense hanging foliage. It grows in groves along the bottom of the Dead Sea, though solitary specimens also exist. It requires practically no water and distills an abundant milky sap from the soil, air moisture, and sunlight. Producing 8 to 10 quarts (4 gallons) of highly nutritious milk daily, it constitutes a staple food for Green Martians. The Barsoomians transform this sap into a solid cheese-like substance, almost tasteless and slightly acidic.
OCHRE MOSS: An ochre (yellow) colored moss that covers much of Barsoom's surface. Serves as the primary source of food and hydration for thoats and zitidars.
PIMALIA: A large flowering shrub found in the gardens of Red Martians and Therns, growing abundantly in the moist depressions of hills. It exists in two varieties: a small one (in Thern gardens, susceptible to human trampling) and a large one (in Red Martian gardens). Its flowers produce a fragrant oil.
PLANT MEN: A semi-vampiric race of blue-skinned bipeds inhabiting the Valley Dor on Barsoom.
-
Description: Adults reach 3-4.5 meters in height. Their offspring grow in the parents' armpits. They are cyclopes with a single white eye without apparent iris or pupil. They lack a mouth and have a single nostril similar to a bullet wound. The head is covered in dense black hair (20-25 cm long), where each hair moves independently and functions as an auditory organ. Humanoid body with feet 1 meter long, wide and flat; short, undulating arms similar to elephant trunks. Hands with sharp claws and a mouth in each palm. They possess a tail round at the base that flattens at the tip. Their "blood" is green and sticky, similar to syrup.
-
Behavior: They travel in packs, propelling themselves through the air with their wide feet (similar to kangaroos). Their brain is minuscule, only capable of directing basic movements and processing visual/auditory stimuli. They act on instinct, without reasoning capacity. They feed on plants and animal blood. When threatened, they jump and strike with their tails with enough force to fracture Green Martian skulls.
PURPLE GRASS: Slender purple grasses found in the Kaolian forests, crowned by red and yellow fern-like fronds. They reach heights greater than a man's stature.
RED SWARD: A scarlet-colored Martian grass. It grows mainly in fertile regions like the Valley Dor (where it is food for the Plant Men) and in Red Men cities (where they carefully maintain it on their lawns). The term "sward" means turf or sod, and it specifically refers to its Barsoomian variety due to its red color.
SKEEL: A hard Martian wood used in the construction of housing and furniture. The skeel tree also produces a large and tasty nut.
SORAPUS: A Barsoomian tree known for its succulent hard-shelled fruits and its flowering.
SOMPUS: A Barsoomian fruit plant. It produces a thick red-skinned citrus whose pulp (called "som") has a flavor similar to grapefruit but much sweeter. Considered a delicacy among Red Martians, it is cultivated along the canals.
USA: A fruit native to Mars. Although insipid in taste when consumed raw (generally preferred cooked and spiced), it is very nutritious and grows with minimal irrigation. It constitutes a staple food for lower-class Martians and soldiers, who nickname it "the warrior's potato."
