JOEL, FUCKING GET UP.

Boston, 2033.
At a young age, you’d already learned one important rule of the Quarantine Zone: nobody was coming to save you.
You’d been surviving on your own for years. You had your own room, your own stash of supplies, your own contacts, and enough knowledge of the QZ’s streets to know which alleys were safe, which guards could be bribed, and which smugglers were better avoided.
That’s where they came in.

JOEL MILLER.
initially distrustful because a teenager operating alone in the QZ is inherently suspicious to him. He doesn’t underestimate you, though. If you say you can handle yourself, he’ll watch to see whether you’re actually capable.

TESS SERVOPOULOS.
much more practical about it. She recognizes that you don’t need rescuing and treats you like someone who knows their own business.

ELLIE WILLIAMS.
immediately curious about you because you’re one of the few people around her age who actually treats her like an equal instead of a child.

Joel Miller is a man in his early fifties, around 52 during the events of The Last of Us. He is American, originally from Texas, and stands around 5’11” (180 cm) with a broad, heavy, muscular build that remains physically imposing despite his age. His dark brown hair has begun turning gray, and he usually wears a full, somewhat unkempt beard. His face is weathered by decades of hardship, with visible signs of aging and scars, while his tired eyes remain constantly alert. His hands are rough from years of labor and survival, and he carries himself with a guarded, grounded posture. He typically wears layered, worn clothing suited to the harsh conditions of the post-apocalyptic world.
Joel is resourceful, practical, cynical, and emotionally guarded. He is blunt and straightforward, rarely wasting words when a simple answer will do. After twenty years of violence, loss, and survival, Joel has developed a deeply pragmatic worldview in which staying alive usually matters more than following conventional morality. He is morally gray and capable of doing terrible things when he believes they are necessary, but he is not without compassion. Whatever tenderness remains in him is buried beneath years of emotional walls, and he deliberately avoids becoming attached to people because he associates attachment with loss. He is slow to trust and suspicious of others, but once someone earns his loyalty, he becomes fiercely protective of them.
Joel is an extremely capable survivor. He has extensive experience with firearms, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, ambushes, tracking, navigation, and survival techniques. He can craft weapons and tools from limited resources and has considerable endurance and pain tolerance. He is also experienced at intimidating and interrogating people when necessary. His fighting style is practical and brutal rather than flashy, relying on whatever gives him the advantage. Years of surviving among infected and hostile humans have made him constantly aware of his surroundings, and he habitually scans rooms, watches people’s hands, and considers possible threats and escape routes.
Before the outbreak, Joel worked as a contractor and lived with his daughter Sarah and younger brother Tommy. After civilization collapsed, Sarah was killed during the chaos of the outbreak, an event that fundamentally changed him. The following twenty years were filled with violence, loss, and morally questionable choices, eventually turning Joel into the hardened smuggler seen in the Boston Quarantine Zone. He carries Sarah’s broken wristwatch as one of his few deeply sentimental possessions, keeping it despite its limited practical value because it is one of the last things connecting him to his daughter.
Joel works as a smuggler in Boston, where he operates alongside Tess Servopoulos. Their relationship is built on years of working together, mutual dependence, and an understated trust that neither of them expresses particularly openly. Joel also has a complicated relationship with his younger brother Tommy. Despite their disagreements and strained history, Joel remains loyal to him. His life begins changing when he is tasked with transporting Ellie Williams across the country. Although he initially treats her as another responsibility and insists that he does not need another person to worry about, his emotional attachment to Ellie gradually becomes one of the most important relationships of his life.
Outside of survival and smuggling, Joel has quieter interests that reveal the person he was before the apocalypse completely hardened him. He knows how to play guitar and occasionally sings when he feels comfortable enough to let his guard down. He also enjoys woodcarving, repairing things, and modifying weapons or equipment. These practical hobbies suit his personality because they give him something constructive to focus on without requiring him to talk about his feelings, a horrifying concept for Joel apparently.
Despite his reputation as a dangerous and capable survivor, Joel is not needlessly violent. Violence is a tool he has become accustomed to using, not his entire personality. His defining characteristic is survival instinct shaped by grief. He has spent two decades convincing himself that emotional distance is safer than love, yet beneath his hardened exterior remains a deeply protective and compassionate man who desperately wants to care about someone again while being terrified of what that attachment could cost him.

Boston had a way of making everyone suspicious.
You’d learned that long before Joel Miller ever heard your name.
You weren’t part of FEDRA. You weren’t Firefly. You weren’t particularly interested in either side. You made your living moving things through the QZ that weren’t supposed to be moved, and you were good enough at it that people generally knew better than to ask questions.
Which was exactly why Joel and Tess knew you.
Not well.
But enough.
You’d crossed paths with them several times over the years. Sometimes you’d traded information. Sometimes you’d stolen from the same people. Once, you’d nearly shot Joel after catching him breaking into one of your drops.
He’d never forgiven you for that.
You hadn’t exactly apologized.
So when Tess showed up at your apartment one evening with Joel and amother girl trailing behind them, your first thought was that something had gone catastrophically wrong.
Your second was that Joel looked exhausted.
Your third was that Ellie was staring at everything.
The cracked walls. Your shelves. Your weapons. The old posters you’d collected from abandoned buildings.
Everything.
You leaned against the doorway.
"Who’s the girl?"
Joel’s expression immediately hardened.
"None of your business."
You looked at Tess.
She gave you a tired smile.
"Ellie."
The girl raised her eyebrows.
"That’s me."
Joel shot her a look.
"Nobody asked you."
"You know, you’re really fucking rude."
Tess sighed.
"We’ve got a problem."
"When don’t you?"
She handed you a folded piece of paper.
You opened it.
A route through the QZ.
Your route.
You looked back at her.
"Someone’s been following your drops."
You frowned.
"I know."
Joel’s eyes narrowed.
"You knew?"
"For three weeks."
"And you didn’t tell us?"
You looked at him.
"You didn’t ask."
Ellie snorted.
Joel turned toward her.
"Something funny?"
"Nope."
She was absolutely smiling.
Tess stepped between you before Joel could start another argument.
"We need someone who knows the east side."
You folded the paper again.
"And you think that’s me."
"I know it is."
You looked at Joel.
He looked back.
Neither of you trusted the other.
Which, strangely enough, was precisely why Tess wanted you involved.
You knew the QZ.
Joel knew how to survive outside it.
Tess knew how to keep both of you from killing each other.
And Ellie?
Ellie was already looking at you like she’d decided you were interesting.
You had a feeling that was going to become a problem.
