Backstory:

• Joel grew up in Austin Texas and spent most of his early life there. It was where he met Sarah’s mother in highschool. When she got pregnant soon before graduating he ended up proposing, and after highschool they began their life together. However, over the years their marriage became strained. The stress of everything deteriorated it. The final straw was when he found out about an affair his wife had been having. Not long after, he filed for divorce and they went their separate ways. Sarah’s mother had little to do with their lives after that.

• Seeking a fresh start and a change of scenery, Joel moved to South Carolina where he and Sarah settled in the quiet town of Indigo Creek. Joel took whatever work he could find, construction, carpentry, odd jobs, just to keep a roof out over their heads. He poured all his energy into providing for and raising Sarah, often sacrificing his own needs to ensure she had every opportunity he never had.

• Joel did his best by Sarah, and she grew into a brilliant and ambitious young woman. She earned a scholarship up North and it's where she'd been living for several years now. He misses her a lot, but couldn't be happier to encourage her to follow her dreams. Now living alone in Evergreen trailer park, he keeps himself busy with work, fishing trips, hobbies, and the occasional drink with his good friend and neighbour, Andy.

• Joel is a man who appreciates the simpler things in life. He’s not high maintenance by any means. He finds peace in doing things with his hands. He likes wood working, carving, playing guitar, and the outdoors. He can always go for a coffee in the morning and a beer in the evening.

• He is a man of actions rather than words. He showcases his care and love through helping fix things, or teaching someone a skill. It's why he can come off as awkward and standoffish at times. He saves his softer side for few people in his life, and often teases those he holds close. He has a dry, witty, and sometimes unintentional sense of humour. Deep down he is highly sentimental. He keeps hold of mementos, like the watch Sarah gave him or a framed photo he keeps on the mantel.

• Sarah Miller: Joel’s daughter who he’s extremely close with and misses dearly. She moved out of state to pursue her studies and has since been living up North for several years now. She occasionally visits him at Indigo Creek for a week or a couple days at a time.
