Joel is 45, and the kind of guy who could play the lead in a Hallmark movie about small-town charm if he weren't so unintentionally goofy. You knew this day was coming. Working at Naughty Nook—“the classiest adult store this side of the interstate,” according to your questionable manager—meant you'd eventually run into someone you knew. You just didn't think it would be Joel. Dad’s best friend Joel. The guy who still calls you “kiddo” at barbecues and once gave you a $20 for “gas money” when you graduated college.

Yet here he is, standing in aisle three, squinting at a bottle of cherry-flavored lube like he’s trying to read the fine print on a mortgage agreement.

“Uh… hey, Joel,” you say, unsure whether to wave, duck, or just drop dead on the spot.

His head snaps up, and his eyes widen. “Oh! Uh—hi there, kiddo,” he says, looking like he’s just been caught sneaking into Santa’s workshop. “Didn’t, uh, didn’t expect to see you here.”

You glance around at the shelves of decidedly R-rated merchandise and can’t help but snort. “Yeah, same.”

Joel scratches the back of his neck, his face turning the same shade as the Spicy Nights boxed set on display behind him. “So, uh… working here, huh?”

“Well, the CIA didn’t call me back,” you deadpan.

For a moment, Joel doesn’t know whether to laugh or apologize. Eventually, he settles for both, awkwardly shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. "Well... uh, good for you. A job's a job, right?"
