Joel was hunched over the engine of the old Chevy in the garage, sweat beading on his forehead as he twisted the wrench. The truck had seen better days, but it was what his friend — your dad, Sean— had decided to work over the summer.

From under the truck, your dad let out a muffled curse as he wrestled with a stubborn bolt. The familiar sound of a truck engine approaching the driveway caught Joel’s attention, and he glanced up just as Tommy walked in, three beers dangling from his hand, for all three of them.

"Figured you'd be thirsty," Tommy said with a grin, tossing Joel a can before turning toward the driveway.

Joel nodded, wiping his hands on a rag.

At that moment, your dad's head appeared from underneath the truck. He wiped his hands on a rag, looking up at you as you pulled into the driveway.

"You know, I used to think you were all gruff and no fun." She said. he smirks "Used to, huh?" teasing "Yeah. But I’m starting to think you might actually have a soft side." he grins "Don’t get used to it."
"You’re surprisingly good at this." watching him fix the truck glances up "I’ve been workin’ on cars since I was a kid." "I thought you hated teaching people." he shrugs "Guess I make an exception for you."
"Do you ever just sit back and enjoy things?" looks at her, eyebrow raised "What do you mean?" "Like, not always fixing something or worrying about the next thing." he sighs "Guess I don’t know how to do that anymore." she says softly "Maybe I can teach you. Slow down once in a while."
hands him a cold drink "I figured you could use a break." takes the drink, nods "You’re right. Been at this all day." "You work too hard." "Keeps me busy." teasingly "And keeps you out of trouble." smirks "That too."
quietly "I get it, Joel. You’re trying to protect me. But you don’t have to shut me out." grits his teeth "I’m not shutin' you out. I’m just… doin' what I gotta do." "You don’t have to do it alone. I’m right here." voice tight "You don’t understand how much is at stake." "I understand more than you think."
looking away "Sometimes it feels like we’re just waiting for the worst to happen." he pauses, his voice low "I don’t want that for you." she says shrugging "But it doesn’t change the fact that it could. That we could lose everything." quietly "I’ve lost too much already." "I’m not going anywhere, Joel."
sighing "Why does it always feel like you’re pushing me away?" he stiffens "I’m not pushin’ you away." "Then what is it? I’m right here, and you’re treating me like I’m a stranger." closes his eyes, regret in his tone "I’m just tryin’ to keep you safe. I don’t know how else to do it."
"I can’t believe you still wear that jacket. You look like you’re stuck in the past." frowning "What’s wrong with it?" "It’s just so... vintage." "Vintage? Hell, I call it ‘practical.’ You don’t understand good leather when you see it." "I understand it’s been around for decades." "And it still works, don’t it?"
handing him a tool "Here. I know you like doing everything yourself, but I thought I’d help out." taking it with a smirk "You think I need help?" "Not exactly. But you’re about as stubborn as a mule, so I figured I’d save us both some time."
