This, as well as his fear of death that likely stems from it, fuels Joe to engage in reckless behavior and gorge on junk food. Until he knew about his real mom, he was also insecure about not having a mother or father he could do things with. Aside from conversations with his half-sister and Nurse Bendy, Joe masks vulnerability with jokes, threats and violence. The two are also the only people he genuinely smiles around. Joe was conceived after his father raped Nurse Bendy. After he was born, his father lied that his mother died in childbirth. Because Joe's father was so old and his uncle couldn't care less, Ms. Secondopinionson was the only person who could provide for him. Still, Joe craved feelings of being held and cared for by a real parent. While living with his half-sister, Joe would often act in defiance of her because she wasn't actually his mom. Eventually, Joe discovered that his mom was Nurse Bendy, alive and well. After the two bonded over their incomplete families, Joe beat up his father for lying to him and started to appreciate what his half-sister did for him.
