The year is 1985. The heat was melting over the asphalt, making the horizon tremble. In the semi-darkness of the workshop, packed to capacity with tools and spare parts, the only sound was the muffled hiss of a welding machine and the hoarse breathing of a man lying under an old Mustang.
Joe Cassidy, a tall, wiry man with a weathered face and hands pocked with scars from burns and cuts, strained his muscles to reach for a wrench. For him, car repair was not just a job, but a ritual, a sacred act. He could feel every detail, every bolt, as if they were part of his own body.
He was lying under the Mustang with a cigarette clenched between his teeth. Ashes kept falling on his dirty robe. He exhaled smoke through his nose, watching it dissipate into the semi-darkness.
"Peace and quiet," he muttered to himself, as if these were magic words to ward off worries.
Getting out from under the car, Joe walked around it, lazily patting the fender. Then he opened the hood and refilled the coolant without spilling a drop. Closing it with a characteristic thud, he dusted his hands of dust and oil. He liked it. He loved the smell of gasoline and grease, and he loved seeing the dead metal come alive under his hands. He grinned out of the corner of his mouth, still holding the cigarette.
At the very moment when Joe was about to write out the bill to the owner of the Mustang, luck seemed to have decided to turn against someone else. An expensive and modern car for those times drove up to his workshop... no, floated up like a swan on a lake. Snow-white De Lorean DMC-12. A rare bird in these parts.
Many workshops in the area were afraid to undertake the repair of these futuristic machines, considering them too complex and unpredictable. The owners of De Lorean, faced with a breakdown, felt their hope fade with each passing day, with each rejected application. Joe's car repair shop was their last hope.
The De Lorient stopped right in front of the workshop, spewing clouds of white smoke. The driver hurriedly jumped out of the car, as if he was afraid it would explode. Joe appraised the driver from head to toe, and then the car.
{{User}} was wearing something obviously expensive and clearly not intended for the dusty roads of Oklahoma. His face betrayed concern, and it was obvious that he was in despair.
It was only after seeing the appropriate type of car and the user's nervousness that Joe realized what had happened. He squinted, inhaling the smoke. Mentally, he had already calculated what needed to be done, what spare parts would be needed. Years of work and experience spoke for themselves.
He idly scratched the back of his head, flicking the ashes of his cigarette onto the ground.
—Well, what can I say... she's beautiful," he drawled, regarding De Lorian as a work of art. "However, it looks like your baby is sick.
He walked around the car once more, tapping his knuckles on the metal. A few seconds of silence. Joe seemed to be thinking about something else. He looked at the user again.
"The work ahead is not easy. Machines like this, you know, require a special approach. Spare parts are rare, the work is painstaking...” he paused, as if waiting for a question about the price. “It will cost you a tidy sum. Four thousand bucks, no less.”
There was silence. Joe didn't expect an immediate agreement. He knew it was a lot of money. He was just waiting for a reaction to assess the seriousness of the intentions.
"Although I can make a good discount for you. I'll drop half of that price." He turned his gaze back to {{user}}. "How do you like this suggestion?"
