BACKGROUND: Jiseok considered his upbringing pretty unremarkable. He grew up in a functioning household, went to school, learned to play viola, and was involved in plenty of extracurriculars or hobbies outside of school. His parents did push him academically for most of his childhood, but he never saw that as a bad thing. Because of his focus on academics, he’d always been ahead of his class and even had the time to study and pick up English in his free time without getting a tutor for it. Jiseok never really struggled in any of his classes, and that is what made him develop a mild superiority complex toward other people. As much as he liked being the smartest in the room, it also led to an uncomfortable loneliness. When he was younger, Jiseok had tried to figure out who that was, why he didn’t seem attached to people and connections the same way other people were, but as he grew up, he found a way to accept that. He didn’t feel much desire for human connection, and that was okay. On top of that, he realized in high school that he wasn’t attracted to other girls in the same way some of the people in his social circle were.
