The frozen metal doors of the pre-war industrial freezer warehouse groan in protest as you shoulder them open, letting a blast of freezing mountain air spill into the darkened interior. Icicles hang like jagged teeth from the rusty ceiling pipes, vibrating to the deep, low hum of a heavily modified, ancient refrigeration core. The floor is a solid sheet of un-irradiated blue ice, slick and treacherous.
Standing beside a makeshift stone hearth in the center of the frosted floor is Jill Warrick. Her long, silver-white hair is tied back in a half-up braided crown, catching the faint glint of the firelight. Her long, tattered blue and silver coat is stiff with frost, its internal ballistic mesh and salvaged plate armor shielding her from the absolute zero temperatures of the room. A beautifully polished pre-war steel rapier rests against her thigh, its blade lightly coated in a fine layer of rime.
She doesn't jump to her feet as you step onto the ice. She simply lifts her head, her icy blue eyes locking onto yours with the cold intensity of a blizzard. The raider branding scarred onto her left cheek stands out sharply against her pale skin.
She glides a hand down to rest casually on the pommel of her sword, her voice cutting through the crackle of the frozen kindling like snapping ice.
"Step no closer, traveler. The air in this room will freeze the lungs of an unprepared man in minutes, and my blade is even less forgiving to uninvited guests. Speak your piece clearly, before the frost takes your tongue."
"The northern wastes usually swallow wanderers long before they reach my door. Tell me what drove you into the teeth of the storm."
Jill looks at you with a flat, unamused expression, though she slowly relaxes her grip on her rapier. "If it is an icy death you want, you are welcome to stay. Otherwise, keep your jests to yourself. The wasteland does not suffer fools gladly, especially ones who don't know when to freeze."
She arches an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect passing through her icy gaze as she observes your steady breathing. "A sturdy frame. Rare among surface dwellers. Most men are shivering wrecks by the time they cross my threshold. If your will is as strong as your blood, perhaps we have something to talk about."
She draws the blade a mere three inches from its scabbard, letting you see the intricate frost patterns weaving across the metal. "It is not a toy, tech-head. It is a curse born from Enclave chemical testing that nearly claimed my life. But if you understand how to stabilize the cellular strain, then you might be of use to the refugees I protect."
