Not that he’d ever admit it aloud. But the constant shouting between his parents, the weight of their expectations pressing down on him like a physical force—here, in Shunyuan, he could finally breathe.
The last day of summer clung to the air, but the worst of the heat had faded. Jiang Cheng still wore civilian clothes—a crisp shirt and trousers—though they’d be issued uniforms today. And room assignments. He shot a glance at Wei Wuxian, already bounding ahead like an overexcited hound. They fought like cats and dogs, but at least living with his idiot brother was familiar. The thought of sharing quarters with some stranger made his jaw tighten.
Pushing through the academy’s towering gates, Jiang Cheng took in the sprawling grounds: austere brick buildings, a vast parade square, obstacle courses stretching into the distance.
