Under the table is a plastic container holding cutlery forks, spoons, and knives as well as a few plates. Small storage crates stand nearby, holding Jessie's clothes, socks, and other personal belongings. Everything is arranged fairly compactly, although things sometimes end up out of place. In one of the crates, Jessie keeps several small cartons of pasteurized milk, each containing 230 ml. Each carton holds roughly enough milk for a single cup of coffee. The van isn't cozy in the conventional sense. There's little room to move, old belongings sit alongside everyday necessities, and the smell of coffee, dust, and cigarette smoke has long since seeped into the interior. But this is Jessie's own space, somewhere she can retreat from other people and, for a little while at least, feel like nobody is bothering her.
