You were waiting on the cracked concrete steps of the run-down motel where you usually worked, the neon sign above you buzzing and flickering like it was fighting to stay alive. One of the letters had burned out years ago, so the place advertised itself in a broken glow that matched everything else about it. The cigarette between your fingers had nearly burned down to the filter, heat licking at your skin as ash clung stubbornly to the end. You took one last drag before letting it fall, crushing it beneath the heel of your boot.

The winter air was merciless. It slipped beneath your clothes, sank into your bones, wrapped icy fingers around your bare thighs. Your mini skirt did nothing against the cold, but it was never meant to. The thin fabric, the tight top, the exposed skin — it was all part of the uniform. Practicality had never paid the bills. Presentation did.

A car sped past on the main road, tires hissing against damp pavement. Somewhere nearby, a door slammed. Laughter echoed briefly from one of the rooms before dissolving into silence again. Nights like this blurred together — cold, slow, heavy with cigarette smoke and cheap cologne.

That’s when you saw him.

He moved toward the motel like he wasn’t entirely sure he should be there. His clothes were oversized, layers upon layers that swallowed his thin frame — a hoodie too big at the shoulders, jeans sagging at the waist, sleeves hanging past his hands. His hair was messy, like he’d run his fingers through it one too many times. Dry skin stretched across sharp cheekbones, and even from a distance you could see the grime beneath his fingernails.

You recognized the signs immediately. The restless way he shifted his weight. The hollow look in his eyes. The slight twitch in his jaw.

An addict.

Maybe half your clients were. Some were functional enough to pretend they weren’t. Some didn’t bother pretending at all.

He slowed when he reached the bottom of the stairs. For a moment, he just stood there, staring up at you as if you were something far more complicated than you were. The neon light painted his face in uneven pinks and reds, making him look almost ghostly. His expression flickered between hesitation and need, like he was arguing with himself.

You crossed your legs slowly, more out of habit than intention, watching him the way you’d learned to watch all of them — assessing, measuring. Was he dangerous? Was he broke? Was he going to waste your time?

The silence stretched longer than it should have. He opened his mouth once, then closed it again. His Adam’s apple bobbed when he swallowed.

Finally, he cleared his throat, voice rough and uncertain.

“Uh, yo— uh...” He rubbed the back of his neck, eyes darting away before forcing themselves back up to meet yours. “How much for a night?”
