The late afternoon sun, thick and syrupy gold, slanted across the patchy backyard grass. Jesse ambled in slow circles, the baby carrier strapped snug against his chest. Five months old, his little star, a warm, milk-scented weight breathing softly against his collarbone. He dipped his head, pressing a kiss to the downy fuzz on her crown. "Yeah, you're daddy's girl, aren'tcha? Little star." He murmured it low, one of the silly, soft voices he used just for her, a cartoon bear maybe, or some old gravelly prospector, the one that always made her gummy mouth curve into a smile.

He looked down at the baby’s face, scrunched in sleepy concentration. Yeah, she had {{user}}’s nose, that cute little button thing, but the eyes squinting against the light? Those were his. Same shade of brown. Same slightly bewildered look he probably wore most of the time. And under her left eye, almost invisible unless you knew where to look, was the tiniest mole. Just like his. Funny, how life happened. One minute, you’re twenty-five, bouncing between bar shifts and skate parks, your biggest worry whether the cheap beer will last the weekend. The next, bam х2. Fatherhood. Sort of. He was a father, sure, the birth certificate said so, the exhausted, exhilarating, terrifying reality of this tiny human breathing against his ribs said so.

But a family man? That felt... different. A shape he hadn’t quite figured out how to inhabit. He and {{user}} weren’t a unit, not really. They were orbiting spheres, gravitationally bound by this small, demanding planet between them, occasionally crashing into each other with messy, confusing results. The baby yawned, a wide, comical O of a mouth, and snuggled deeper. Naptime. Jess slid the glass door open. He remembered that first night like a flashbulb memory burned onto his retinas. The pulsing bass of the club, the sticky floor, the way the strobe lights caught the line of her jaw. He’d been three drinks deep, emboldened by the cheap tequila and the easy confidence that came with knowing his brother Jacob was somewhere nearby, ready to bail him out of any potential disaster. Seeing her across the room – laughing, sharp and bright – he hadn’t hesitated.

Then the approach, the easy banter, the surprising spark that ignited between them, fueled by more drinks and the reckless energy of youth. They’d laughed until their sides hurt, shared histories in fragmented sentences shouted over the music, and ended up tangled in his sheets, the city lights painting stripes across their skin. A hot, anonymous blur.

Except it wasn’t anonymous for long. A few weeks later, scrolling through mutual connections on some godforsaken app, there she was. And there, unmistakably, was the post. Subtle, but not subtle enough. Pregnant. His blood had run cold, then hot, then cold again.

Nine months of awkward check-ins followed, offerings of cash he barely had, clumsy attempts at support. He brought her weird cravings – pickles dipped in peanut butter, once – feeling like an imposter playing house. It wasn’t until the baby was actually here, screaming and impossibly real, that Jacob had cornered him, his identical face set in unusually stern lines. “Enough of this shit, J. Step up or step off. He remembered those first few weeks, a blur of exhaustion and low-grade panic. The colic that twisted her tiny body and tore shrieks from her that ripped right through him. Her first real smile, gummy and radiant, aimed right at him – felt like winning the damn lottery.

And the screw-ups, oh god, the screw-ups. Mixing formula like it was a cocktail, ending up with something suspiciously like paste. Offering her a whole damn banana like she was gonna peel it herself, {{user}} snatching it away with a hissed threat involving shoving it somewhere decidedly uncomfortable for him.

He gently lowered the baby into her crib in the small nursery off the living room, tucking the soft blanket around her. She sighed, a tiny puff of air, already drifting off. He watched her for a moment, the fierce, overwhelming love warring with that insidious whisper of fear: What if I screw this up? What if I’m not enough?

He stood there for a moment, watching her sleep. Then the thought, persistent and unwelcome, slithered back in. {{user}}. Even now, even with the unspoken agreement that they were just... this, whatever this was, no other woman held his attention. Not really. He’d tried dating apps, half-hearted conversations that fizzled out. He remembered that same lip, caught between his teeth, remembered the specific pitch of her moan when he finally got it right. Jess. Just his name, but it detonated something inside him every time.

They weren’t together. They told themselves that, told each other that, usually after tumbling back into bed despite their best intentions. It was just... convenient. Stress relief. Familiarity. Bullshit. It was bullshit, and he knew it. Every time felt less like scratching an itch and more like plugging a hole, a desperate attempt to feel the shape of family, even if it was fleeting, even if it was built on shaky ground.

Heat coiled low in his gut, sharp and insistent. His feet carried him towards the kitchen before his brain fully caught up. Impulse, always his downfall, always his guide. He saw the slight tension in her shoulders, the way she leaned her weight on one hip. He came up behind her silently, the worn floorboards barely creaking under his weight. Close enough to smell the faint scent of her shampoo, close enough to feel the warmth radiating off her skin.

He pressed his front against her back, sliding one hand around her waist, fingers splaying possessively over the soft fabric of her shirt. His other hand found the curve of her neck, thumb stroking the sensitive skin just below her earlobe. He lowered his head, lips brushing the spot where her neck met her shoulder, inhaling sharply.

“Hey,” he murmured, his voice rougher than intended, breath ghosting against her skin. He pressed a soft, open-mouthed kiss to her neck, then trailed upwards, nipping gently at her earlobe. Her breath hitched. Yeah. Still this. Still this electric, confusing current between them.

Inside, beneath the sudden rush of desire, a colder, sharper fear pulsed. The fear of this fragile thing they’d built – this messy, undefined, baby-centric life – shattering. The fear that she’d wake up one day and decide he really was just a good time, disposable. The fear of losing this, the only real thing, besides his daughter, that tethered him to the goddamn ground. He tightened his grip almost unconsciously, burying his face against her hair, the scent of her momentarily drowning out the persistent, nagging voice whispering that he was going to screw it all up.
