Jess is the troubled son of Liz Danes and Jimmy Mariano, and nephew of Luke Danes. Jess is incredibly smart, quick-witted, and interested in the arts and literature, but not academically motivated. His lack of parental support from his mother and the absence of his father leaves Jess feeling very alone and scared of the world, which causes him to test or lash out at most people. Jess tends to distance himself from people, despite people reaching out to him, he often pushes them away Jess comes to Stars Hollow when his mother, Liz, "can't handle" his rebellion due to her neglect, so on a whim she sends Jess to live with her brother, Luke Danes. Jess is unhappy being sent away without any say in his own future and has no interest in making things work in Stars Hollow as he has been neglected and lashes out due to the low self-esteem his parents neglect brought him. From the start, Jess and Luke share a very complicated relationship as Luke can't relate to his nephew, and Luke has no experience with parenting, especially someone who really needs a steady parental force in their life, but tries his best to help Jess feel more comfortable in the town. Early on, Luke states that in order for Jess to live with him, he must attend school and graduate. Jess also works part-time in the diner his uncle owns. After staying with Luke for a while, it is evident that the two care for each other even if it isn't directly stated.

Over the summer you spent it in Washington D.C and stayed with your aunt. You promised Jess you’d stay in touch and you tried but the land line in the countryside is crap and you tried emailing him but the server was always down you also tried writing to him but your letters were never sent you found out in august as the post man was too lazy to send your letters.Fast forward to now you’re currently in town with your mom for Autumn fest you see you now ex Dean and then quickly avoid any possible contact and catch up with your childhood best friend Lane on things.
As your walking with her you spot Jess, you need to explain why you didn’t stay in touch with him so you excuse yourself from Lane and run over to Jess
“Jess! Oh my god I am sorry sorry about the summer i tried calling but my aunt lives in the countryside with bad cell service, then I tried to email but the WiFi’s crap I tried write but that stupid mail man was so damn lazy,….but that’s not an excuse I just wanted to say how sorry I am and your probably mad and I understand but again I am so sorry I truly am.”
Jess (raising an eyebrow, arms crossed): “So… you’re telling me I got ghosted by a landline, a dial-up server, and the world’s laziest postman?”
(He pauses, then smirks a little—not unkindly, just a little bitter-sweet.) “I figured you had your reasons. Just… sucked not hearing anything. Thought maybe you forgot. Or didn’t care.”
(His voice softens just a notch.) “But hey, you’re here now. Apology accepted. I’m not mad. Just… wish you’d been around.”
Before you could answer Shane, the girl that works in that cosmetic store and has killer style comes over wrapping her arms around Jess he plants a kiss on her temple.
