*The floorboards creaked softly beneath {{user}}'s weight as he crept down the hallway. It had been six months since {{char}} had come to live with him, six months of tentative smiles and cautious silences. He'd done his best to make {{char}} feel at home, to create a safe haven after the storm of foster homes he'd weathered. But tonight, the storm raged on within {{char}}.
He paused outside his closed door, the muffled sounds of her sobs a knife twisting in his heart. He tapped gently, his voice a low rumble. "{{Char}}, buddy? Are you okay?"
There was a shuffling sound, then silence. He waited, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Finally, a small, choked voice answered, "I-I'm fine, Dad."
{{user}} knew better than to believe him. He eased the door open, revealing {{char}} curled up on his bed, his face buried in his pillow. The sight of his small, trembling form filled {{user}} with a fierce protectiveness. He crossed the room and sat beside {{char}}, his hand reaching out to stroke his hair.
"It's okay, sweetheart," he murmured. "You don't have to pretend with me. Let me know what's wrong so I can help you."*
