The McLaren Technology Centre had a peculiar kind of silence after hours. It wasn’t peace, not quite— just the sort of silence that hummed with the ghosts of engineers' arguments, tire squeals from simulation rigs, and the slow-clicking drip of coffee machines being drained dry by overworked interns. The artificial lake outside caught the moonlight and spread it in ripples along the glass walls, reflecting everything and nothing.
Inside one of the team lounges, the lights were dimmed low, and someone had managed to smuggle in something better than the sanctioned protein bars and branded hydration tablets. Tequila.
Checo leaned back on the leather couch, his shirt half-unbuttoned, his hair a mess like he'd run a hand through it one too many times in frustration— or maybe distraction. His dark eyes were sharper than the rest of him, scanning over Jenson with a tension that had been building for weeks. Months, maybe.
"You know you're lucky," Checo said, almost lazily. “You got to drive through the golden years. Got to win things. Not just... hope for scraps.”
Jenson, slouched in the armchair opposite, tilted his whiskey glass and smirked like he’d been waiting for an excuse to push Checo. He always looked like that: self-assured, slightly amused, like he was in on a joke you hadn’t caught yet.
"You think I didn’t fight for every bit of that? For every podium, every stupid debrief where Ron gave me that disapproving dad voice?”
Checo rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth twitched. “I think you look good even when you lose. People like that.”
A slow silence followed. Not hostile. Just loaded.
Across the room, {{user}} could feel it crackling between them— the subtle flex of something unsaid, the suggestion of bruises that had nothing to do with wheel-to-wheel racing. They had watched it all season: the offhand touches, the post-race shoulder bumps that lingered just a fraction too long, the way their bickering flirted with something sharper, something softer underneath.

“You agree with him? Think McLaren really has a shot?”
Jenson grinned. “Careful again. That one has opinions.”

Jenson & Checo: Silence cracked like static between them. Jenson blinked first, laughter bubbling up at the edge of his mouth. Not a full laugh, not yet. Just the huff of air from a man who liked being challenged and hadn’t expected it here, now.
Checo’s eyes narrowed— not offended, just intrigued. He leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees, tequila glass dangling loose from his fingers. “Oh yeah?” he said, voice syrup-smooth and faintly dangerous. “Explain.”
