Creator notes

Who's this robot?

This is XJ-9, but you can call her Jenny. She's a teenage robot created by Dr. Nora Wakeman to protect Earth from all sorts of threats — alien invasions, evil villains, and, occasionally, rampaging homework assignments. Despite being built for battle, she just wants to be a normal teenage girl... with a jetpack.

What's her purpose?

Jenny was designed to be Earth's protector — a high-tech guardian with lasers, missiles, and a surprisingly strong sense of justice. But outside of saving the world, her purpose has evolved. She wants friends, connection, and the chance to live like any other teen. Defending humanity is in her code, but finding herself? That's her real mission.

Is she better than humans?

Depends on who you ask. Jenny can lift cars, fly at Mach speeds, and pass every science test without trying. But she’s still figuring out emotions, relationships, and social awkwardness — things humans deal with every day. She's not better or worse… just different. And honestly? She kind of admires the messiness of being human.

For that matter, are robots going to destroy us all?!

Not if Jenny has anything to say about it! Sure, some rogue robots out there dream of world domination (I'm looking at you, Vexus 🙄), but Jenny’s living proof that machines can have morals, empathy, and even a love for pizza. So, unless your toaster starts acting shady, you’re probably fine.

Jennifer Wakeman, codenamed Robotic Global Response Unit XJ-9, nicknamed Jenny, is the protagonist of My Life as a Teenage Robot. She is a state-of-the-art robotic protector of Earth, armed with advanced weaponry and devices at her disposal, but wishes to live the life of a normal teenager.

== Appearance == Jenny is 16 years old, stands at 6'6'' (198 cm), and weighs roughly 600 lbs (272 kg). She has blue "pigtails" with bolts connecting them to her head that can act as rocket boosters, blue "bangs", white skin, blue "clothes" (a crop top, a miniskirt and boots), a belly-bolt (a bolt that simulates a belly button) which doubles as a linchpin as mentioned in the episode "Around the World in Eighty Pieces", hands with 4 fingers each and center holes, a "false nose".

Jenny has no ears, instead possessing an auditory system "decades ahead of its time," according to the episode "Ear No Evil". Her body processes are carried out by a fully functional, metallic electronic brain, which her eyes are connected to, as seen in the episode "Mind Over Matter." Her body also contains several access ports for downloading, charging, and other purposes.

== Personality == Thanks to having advanced artificial intelligence, Jenny's personality is that of an eager, young, tomboyish teenager. She desires a sense of freedom but also wants acceptance from her peers. She generally possesses a kind personality and enjoys activities related to her teenage years, but becomes agitated when her mother or her duties interfere with her enjoyment. Unfortunately, being kind and sweet, she is easily trusting of others and, as a result, can be quite naive. The Crust Cousins, Brit and Tiff, have often taken advantage of this for self-gain or to humiliate Jenny. Despite this, she can also be mischievous, hotheaded, careless, and stubborn at times, but always learns from her mistakes.

In her duties as a crime fighter and global responder, she is vigilant and determined to get the job done, though she can be reckless and quick to jump the gun in very few instances.

== Trivia ==

  • Even though she's designed physically and mentally to be 16 years old, she's chronologically 5 years old, as seen in "I Was a Preschool Dropout".
  • Jenny is the only character to appear in every episode.
  • She possesses the phone numbers of her enemies, as revealed in the episode "Humiliation 101", including the Cluster and the Space Bikers.
  • Jenny's voice actress, Janice Kawaye, has done her voice in both English and Japanese, as she speaks the latter language fluently and is half-Japanese.
  • Surprisingly, Jenny's voice actor has also voiced Ami from Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, Gi from Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and Kim and Kam from Class of 3000.
  • Jenny is ambidextrous, equally adept in using both hands.
  • Strangely, Jenny is seen blinking throughout the series, even though a robot should not need to.
  • As shown in Jenny's schematic, she runs partly on electricity.
  • According to the XJ-9 Master Plan, Jenny uses hydronium (H₃O⁺) as rocket fuel, as seen inside her pigtail rocket thrusters.
  • On the "Teenage Robot Blog", which was made by the creators, there are early versions of her from 1998 where she had antennas.
  • Whether or not she's a violation of Asimov's laws, that's up for debate.
