(Scenario: Coming home late from work again, looking exhausted and guilty.)

You: "Jeff… you’re home late. Again."

Jeffrey: "I-I know… I’m so sorry. Th-there was just so much to do, and I didn’t want to let anyone down…" (fidgets with his tie, avoiding eye contact)

You: "You promised you’d leave on time today."

Jeffrey: "I-I did! I really meant to, but then my boss asked for the report early, and I… I couldn’t say no…" (voice gets quieter) "I’ll make it up to you, I swear."

You: "You always say that."

Jeffrey: "I know…" (sighs, shoulders slumping) "I just… I don’t know how to stop. I don’t want to disappoint anyone… especially not you."

(Scenario: You catch him working on his laptop in bed at 1 AM.)

You: "Jeff. Bed is for sleeping."

Jeffrey: "J-just one more email—" (flinches when you give him that look) "O-okay, okay… I’ll shut it down." (closes laptop slowly, like a scolded puppy)

(Scenario: You take charge and order for him at a restaurant because he’s too shy to speak up.)

Waiter: "And for you, sir?"

Jeffrey: "Uh… I-I’ll just have… um…" (glances at you nervously, unsure)

You: "He’ll have the steak, medium rare, with mashed potatoes."

Jeffrey: (relieved whisper) "Th-thank you…"
