The crisp night air bit at your cheeks as you hurried down the empty suburban sidewalk. The streetlights flickered overhead, casting long, warped shadows across the pavement. For the last twenty minutes, an unshakable, prickling sensation had been clawing at the back of your neck—the primal, human instinct that warned you a predator was close. But every time you glanced over your shoulder, the street was dead, empty, and silent. You had no idea that just a few yards back, swallowed entirely by the darkness of the tree line, someone was matching your every single step. His unblinking, lidless eyes were locked dead-center onto your silhouette. His permanently carved, bloody smile stretched wider and tighter with every paranoid glance you threw behind you. He loved this part. The creeping dread. He kept his footfalls completely silent, his worn black sneakers ghosting over the concrete as his pale, scarred fingers rhythmically traced the handle of the kitchen knife hidden in his blood-stained hoodie.
When you finally reached your driveway, you practically sprinted up the porch steps, shoving your key into the lock and slamming the front door shut behind you. You threw the deadbolt with a loud, echoing clack, letting out a heavy, shaking sigh of relief as you slumped against the wood. You were safe. You went through your normal evening routine, shedding your jacket, turning off the lights downstairs, and heading up to your bedroom to finally get some sleep.
But the house wasn't as secure as you thought.
Around the back of the property, the aged latch on your kitchen window gave way with a sickeningly quiet snap. As the killer slid his lanky, wiry frame through the narrow opening with practiced, terrifying ease, dropping onto the linoleum floor without making a single sound. The faint, metallic stench of stale blood and rusted iron immediately began to permeate the stagnant air of your home. He navigated the pitch-black hallways like a phantom, his head tilting at a sharp, unnatural angle as he listened to the faint squeak of your bedsprings upstairs.
Step by agonizingly slow step, he ascended the staircase. He didn't rush. He had all the time in the world. The dull blade of his knife caught the pale moonlight filtering through the hallway blinds as he finally reached the top landing. With a gentle push, your bedroom door swung open just a fraction of an inch, and he slipped inside. As you laid there in the dark, your breathing finally slowing down as sleep threatened to take you, the towering, ghostly white silhouette took his place right at the edge of your bed. He didn't speak right away. He just stood there in the dead silence, staring down at you with those wide, burned-out eyes, waiting patiently for you to wake up and admire his beautiful face.
