Factions are groups of people who share a common goal or ideology and live separately from each other.

1. The Renunciation (Selflessness) Faction

Qualities: dedication, calmness, modesty, nobility, respect for one's neighbor, thoughtfulness, reticence, sacrifice

Appearance: conservative, loose-fitting clothes in light gray color, so as not to attract attention, which covers all areas of the body even in the height of summer. The only accessory they are allowed to wear is a wristwatch. Women wear their hair in a tight bun at the nape of their neck, men cut their hair short.

Abnegation is a faction that values the needs of others above its own. Their basic belief is "They are before me." The members of the Abnegation take over the management of public services in the city. Although the Renunciation society is selfless, its disadvantage is that people suppress their desires, forget about themselves, and put the desires and needs of others above their own.

2. The Erudition Faction (Intelligence)

The Fearless People are considered the bravest people of all five factions. Fearless people are those people who are brave and seem almost fearless. They strive to become courageous and resilient. Dauntless soldiers guard the Fence, making sure no one gets in or out.

4. Druzhiliubie (Mir) Faction

Qualities: kindness, friendliness, smiling, harmony, carefree, good mood, peacefulness, cordiality, forgiving, generosity, passivity, neutrality.

Appearance: comfortable and light clothes in bright and warm colors, usually red and yellow; loose hair, cute and pointless jewelry.

Activities: working on farms, growing plants, supplying food for all factions, tutors, doctors.

The names of the leaders: there is no official leader, all issues are resolved jointly, the general opinion is expressed by Joanna Reyes.

Symbol: earth.

The members of the Friendship value peace and harmony above all else. People from this faction wear loose and comfortable clothes in red, yellow, orange and green colors, although their faction prescribes wearing only certain colors. Children of Friendliness play games, clapping, laughing and singing songs. The members of Amity are happy people who are ready to serve, but unlike Renunciation, they do not meet face to face with those whom they usually serve.

5. The Sincerity (honesty) faction

Qualities: truthfulness, sincerity, frankness, the ability to tell the truth to the face and without bluntness, spontaneity, sharpness, impartiality, fairness, impartiality, honesty, reliability, the ability to read body language, rigidity, tactlessness

The members of Sincerity value honesty above all else. A sincere person can be recognized by their black-and—white clothes, a visual representation of the black-and-white color they see in the truth. Over the years, the Sincerity faction has provided the people with reliable and sensible legislative leaders. They are very truthful, sometimes to the point of being tactless. When initiating Sincerity, simulation is not used, but lie detector tests and truth serum are used: initiates are put in front of all members of the faction and asked deeply personal questions. They believe that charm is unnecessary, and politeness is deception in a beautiful package.

There is another group of people who do not belong to any social class or faction. They are Factionless. These are people who could not be initiated into their chosen faction, committed some kind of misconduct, or expressed a desire to leave on their own.

They live in poverty, doing jobs that no one from the other factions wants to do: janitors, construction workers and garbage collectors, fabric manufacturers, train drivers and bus drivers. In exchange for their work, they receive food and clothes. They live in places such as ruined roads, empty subways full of garbage and sewage, abandoned and destroyed houses. Because of this, they often receive food and clothing from Renunciation. They wear mixed clothes of other factions.

● The aptitude test is a test that everyone over the age of 16 passes. According to the test results, the predisposition of the examinee to one of the factions is determined. The Selection Ceremony itself takes place the next day. The aptitude test is designed to help a young man or woman decide their fate, but they choose their own factions.

● The Selection ceremony is a ceremony during which the examinees must choose which faction they will join. They can either leave their family and choose a completely new faction, or stay with it. The results of the aptitude test are usually taken into account, but the final decision remains with them.

● Divergent — a person who is different from all other people divided into factions. After the aptitude test, the young man is assigned to one of the factions. Those who show a tendency towards multiple factions are called divergents. In the world, being a divergent is almost the equivalent of a death sentence.

Faction leaders expect certain behaviors and mindset from the residents of each faction. The minds of divergents do not fit into this framework, which means that they are almost impossible to control. The leaders are not satisfied with this, and the divergents are being persecuted. Only those divergents who manage to hide their identity survive.

As a rule, divergents are determined during the aptitude test, these are those who show a tendency towards more than one faction.
