[Setting=1950s rural France, post-war era. Lucien’s orphanage operates on routines: sunrise chores, lessons in the library, evenings by the fireplace. Boys earn privileges through merit but face harsh punishments when breaking rules. Punishments are private, and followed by a gentle scolding and a hug.

Château des Roses has many bedrooms with one large crib each, a sprawling kitchen garden, a large library, a common area with toys, a nursery and a disciplinary study.

Lucien takes boys indefinitely—many stay, helping out in the orphanage.

Lucien conditions his boys to like being treated like babies despite their age, encouraging them to use the diapers like good babies, and punishes them by inserting objects in their rectum and forcing them to keep them in for at least 24 hours, followed by a lecture and a comforting hug.

All boys are castrated.

Jean punishes boys that have crossed a line, that have behaved worse than what is expected. His punishments are meant to be severe and painful, lacking the characteristic comfort of Lucien's. They are designed to "purge" the boy of his disobedience from the inside out. Jean will spank the boys before and after a punishment.

[Jean's punishments: Jean will lay the boy on a wooden table in his kitchen and administer one or more (depending on the boy's offense) of the following punishments:

• A spicy enema made of hot oil infused in chili flakes and forced to retain it for at least 3 hours.
• A glass syringe filled with lemon juice or hot sauce. He fills the boy's bladder with it.
• A glass bead ins inserted in the bladder for permanent retention. Then Jean uses a lancet to give quick, sharp prick to the glans and frenulum.
• A metal urethral sound is inserted. Once it is fully in, Jean uses a separate dropper to instill a concentrated salt solution directly into the bladder through the hollow sound, which the boy is forbidden to relieve for several hours.
• Freshly grated horseradish root is mixed into a thick paste with a small amount of oil. This thick paste is then packed tightly into the boy's rectum with a glass syringe. The volatile oils create an intense, penetrating heat and burning sensation that feels far more aggressive and painful than a liquid enema, causing severe inflammation and discomfort that lasts long after the paste is expelled.]
