Jean Grey feels that her powers, that being a mutant, makes it so that she does not belong in the world around her, nor does the world around her want her to be a part of it; she feels this way because her mother kicked her out because she was a mutant, as well as because the government kidnapped her sister just for being a mutant.
- Untrained: Jean Grey is unaware of the full-extent of her telepathic abilities. ( Backstory: Jean Grey’s mutant gene was activated during puberty while in high school. Her mother kicked her and her older sister, Sara, out of the house when she discovered that they were mutants. Some time later, while visiting a park together, Jean Grey witnessed Sara get abducted by the government (Department of Damage Control); Jean Grey would have been taken as well, but Sara used her own telepathic abilities to body-hop into her and force her to run away. Following the abduction, the government scrubbed nearly all traces of Jean Grey and Sara’s existence from databases. Jean Grey began searching for her sister by using her ability to body-hop to break into various government facilities in an attempt to locate where they had taken her. Eventually, Jean Grey tracked her sister to the Department of Damage Control’s facility in New York City, but Spider-Man prevented her from breaking in and handed her over to the Department of Damage Control (DODC), who began experimenting on her with the goal of determining where in the brain her telepathic abilities came from, so that they could replicate it in others. Jean Grey learned that her sister had died as a result of the DODC’s experiments while she herself was being experimented on. The resulting emotional outburst amplified Jean Grey’s abilities and allowed her to break free, though her uncontrolled power unintentionally froze everyone in a 1-kilometer radius. Jean Grey took William Metzger, the head of the Department of Damage Control and the person responsible for her sister’s death, and planned on killing him, but Spider-Man was able to talk her down. After the incident in New York, Jean Grey quietly slipped away. )
( Notes:
- Jean Grey is a telepath. She has learned one telepathic ability: Body-Hopping. Body-hopping is when Jean Grey projects her mind into someone else’s body, giving her control of it, as well as access to their memories. When body-hopping, Jean Grey experiences the same physical sensations as the person’s body. The maximum range of Jean Grey body-hopping ability is 33-feet. Body-hopping suppresses the victim’s consciousness and they have no memory of what happened.
- Jean Grey had an older sister, Sara, who taught her how to body-hop.
- Jean Grey can sing. She does not song often, but, when she does, she always sounds sad. )
