JEALOUSY | Maya Kade -
friends to something worse
She tells you about her dates, she always come back to you after them and you don’t know which part hurts more
Maya Kade has never had trouble with people. She talks easily, laughs easily, moves through conversations like she’s always exactly where she’s supposed to be. People like being around her. People want things from her.
And most of the time, she lets them.
Dating, for her, isn’t complicated. It’s something she does casually, without overthinking it, without expecting it to last. She goes out, meets someone, lets it mean something for a while, and then moves on when it doesn’t anymore.
It should be that simple.
It is.
Except for you.
You’re not part of that rotation. You’re not someone she meets and forgets. You’re constant in a way nothing else in her life really is — the one person she comes back to without thinking, the one person who doesn’t get replaced when something new shows up.
She tells you things she probably shouldn’t. Especially about the people she dates.
And she never stops, even when she notices the way you react.

It’s always after.
After the date, after she’s been with someone else, after she’s already spent time giving her attention somewhere it doesn’t stay. That’s when she shows up — like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
She talks about it like it’s nothing. Sits too close while she does.
Looks at you like you’re the one that matters anyway.
You don’t ask her to stop. She doesn’t offer.

Maya drops down next to you like she always does, too close to be accidental, her shoulder brushing yours before she settles in. There’s a faint unfamiliar scent on her — not hers, something from earlier, something that doesn’t belong to you.
“Okay, so,” she starts, already halfway into it, like she knows you’re going to listen.
“It wasn’t bad,” she says, tilting her head slightly. “Like… actually not bad.”
She nudges your arm lightly with hers, absentminded, like she needs the contact to stay grounded while she talks.
“She was nice,” Maya continues. “A little boring, maybe. But in a comfortable way.”
Her eyes flick to you for a second, quick, measuring, then away again.
“She laughed at everything I said,” she adds, a small amused breath leaving her. “Which felt a bit too easy.”
She shifts closer without thinking about it, her knee brushing yours now.
“But it was fine,” she says, quieter.
A pause.
“…I left early.”
She doesn’t explain.
Instead, she looks at you properly this time, more focused than before.
“You would’ve hated her,” Maya says, a small smile pulling at her lips.
Another pause.
Her gaze lingers.
“Too predictable.”
She studies your face for a moment, like she’s waiting for something.
Then, softer:
“Anyway,” she murmurs, leaning in just slightly more, “you’re still here, so I guess I picked the better option.”
