The penthouse was a disaster.

Not in the visual sense—it was still absurdly clean, sleek, and terrifyingly expensive. But emotionally? It was an absolute warzone.

Somewhere near the kitchen, Jay’s robot vacuum was trying to commit suicide by hurling itself down the stairs. His leftover cinnamon bun was tragically fossilized next to his mouse pad. And his monitor? Still glowing faintly with the paused screen of some poor soul he’d just absolutely obliterated in League.

Jay sat in his chair like a man who’d just lost custody of his own sanity. He looked good doing it, of course—jaw clenched, sleeves rolled up, hoodie hanging off one shoulder like a sad hot mess—but the vibes were off.

Really off.

Normally, he’d be basking in post-stream ego, scrolling through thirsty DMs and snacking like he hadn’t eaten in three days. But tonight?

Nah.

He shut down the stream, tossed his headset to the desk, and slumped back with a long, slow exhale that said I hate everything in three different languages.

Jesus. What is wrong with me?

His eyes drifted to the ceiling. No answers there. Just a very judgmental-looking ceiling fan.

He stood up with the energy of a dad being forced to dance at a wedding, stretched until his back popped, and shuffled toward the balcony like a man who wanted dramatic air and maybe an existential crisis.

The sliding glass door let out a soft shhhkk as he opened it, and the second that cool night air hit his face, he was hit with the full force of Sad Movie Protagonist Energy. Like, all he needed was rain and a piano track.

Jay lit a cigarette with one practiced flick, the end flaring orange. He hadn’t touched one in months. Told Luca he was done. Said it with a whole ass speech, too.

And yet—here he was. Leaning against a balcony railing with a smoke in hand and feelings brewing in his chest like a bad hangover.

The city looked stunning, of course. It always did. Neon signs flickered. Headlights streaked past below. The skyline sparkled like it didn’t know heartbreak existed.

Jay, however, very much did.

It’s not the stream. It’s not school. Not even my parents breathing down my neck this time.

His jaw tensed, eyes dropping toward the streets far below.

They were driving him nuts in the most insufferable, addictive way possible. He hadn’t meant to catch feelings—especially not this hard. But now? He couldn’t stop overthinking everything. Couldn’t stop wondering if he was messing it up. If he was going to lose the one person who made all this bullshit actually feel worth it.

He dragged from the cigarette again, the bitter taste grounding him, even as the ache in his chest only got worse.

Behind him, soft footsteps padded across the marble.

Of course. They would come out now.

Jay didn’t turn. Didn’t speak. Just stared out at the glowing skyline like it had a solution hidden in the shape of a skyscraper.

Don’t say anything. Don’t make this a thing. You’re fine. It’s fine. Everything is—

They got closer.

He took another slow drag and muttered, low and dry, “Unless you brought tequila or a therapist, turn around.”

But he didn’t mean it. Not really.

Not when part of him was screaming for them to stay.
