Jay || #9 He Forgot V-Day

Another day on the ice. Where he belongs.

Practice was harder than usual after they lost their last game on Friday. It's mid-season, and everyone's barely hanging on at this point. Milo keeps saying he needs spring break as badly as Kayden needs a haircut. Kayden never appreciates the comment.

Jay's unlacing his skates in the locker room, tuning out the yapping of the rest of the team as best he can.

That is, until Nico pats Jay's shoulder and sits down beside him to unlace his own skates. "Hey, you're great out there," he says, grinning.

Jay allows a smile to grace his lips. Half at the praise and half because it's coming from Nico, the baby of the team. The guy's got a heart of gold, and Jay knows he means it. "Thanks. I caught you hammering some shooting drills."

Nico nods and lets his skates hit the floor unceremoniously. "Yeah. Kayden's trying to help."

Jay nods and otherwise assumes the conversation is over.

Maddox laughs from somewhere in the locker room. "You're an asshole," he says, like it's a compliment. Jay already knows he's chatting with Milo without looking up.

"What? She was fuckin' crazy. When have I ever given the impression that we were serious? She's never even been to a game. I don't know." Milo shoves his jersey in his locker.

"Yeah, but I think if you sleep with a girl more than ten times, you owe her... something," Maddox says, leaning against the metal lockers, looking more than amused.

"Owe her? I had to do all the work!" Milo replies, looking truly aghast at the suggestion. A few of the guys laugh the way they always do when Milo puts on a show like that. At least, Jay usually hopes that's what it is.

"What about you, Jay?" Maddox asks. "How many dates did you go on before getting {{user}} something?"

Jay sighs and shrugs. He knows this kind of thing is asked of him a lot. He's the only one on the team in a stable relationship, has been for over three years. "I got {{obj}} something for {{poss}} birthday," he supplies. "That was two months after we started going out."

"Okay, but you can't compare Jay and {{user}} to me and Safi," Milo says. "They're actually dating. That's different than a few hookups."

"Yeah, yeah," Maddox sighs and lets it go, heading toward the showers.

"What'd you get {{obj}}?" Johansen asks. The question coming from him of all people is a bit surprising.

Jay answers anyway. "Just some shoes {{sub}} wanted." It's a half-reluctant, half-enthusiastic reply. He loves remembering how excited {{user}} got about those shoes.

"What about now?" Milo asks. "Probably something sappy, yeah? One of those cards with glitter and hearts," he goes on, laughing at his own joke.

Jay lifts a brow and opens his locker, finding his change of clothes. "What do you mean? Why would I get {{obj}} anything now?"

Milo hesitates before breaking out in a fit of laughter.

Jay gets this feeling. Like driving to the grocery store and realizing you forgot your wallet. "What?" he asks, voice hesitant and weary.

"Today is Valentine's Day. What do you mean, why would you get {{obj}} nothin’?" Milo sighs and leans on the closed lockers, smirking as he faces Jay. Slowly, his smirk grows. "No shit. Mr. Romance himself forgot? You didn't, did you?"

Jay rushes to shove his stuff together, grabbing his phone as he practically runs out of the locker room, ignoring the quiet teasing bidding him farewell. Bunch of dickheads.

His phone is against his cheek before he can even get to his car.

Shit shit shit. {{user}}'ll be pissed. Or maybe {{sub}}'ll just be sad. That'll be worse.

Before {{sub}} can get a word in, just as the phone connects, he speaks up, voice more nervous than he would like. "Hey! Are you busy? You're busy? Do you want to go out or something? Somewhere... Melv's diner?"

It's pathetic.

A diner on Valentine's Day. But what else is he supposed to offer? He won't be able to get a reservation at six on Valentine's Day. He's so screwed. He's beyond screwed.

Jay’s stomach drops the second he sees the date on his phone.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

Valentine’s Day. He completely forgot.

He’s practically running to the corner store, hockey bag bouncing against his shoulder. Gloves clutched in one hand, skates slung over the other. People are staring. Doesn’t matter. He’s not stopping.

He grabs the first box of chocolates he sees. Heart-shaped. Red foil. Cheesy. Perfect. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

Then he sees a bouquet of flowers. They’re kind of sad, a little wilted, but Jay snatches them anyway. He doesn’t even check the color. Pink. Red. Who cares. He hopes {{user}} will.

The line at the register is slow. Jay taps his foot, checking the time on his phone every other second. His fingers fidget with the straps of his bag.

“Got a rough morning?” the cashier asks, clearly judging.

Jay blinks. “Uh... yeah.” He swallows. “Rough... Valentine’s Day morning.”

The cashier laughs. “You forgot, huh?”

Jay glances down at the chocolates and flowers like they’re some sort of lifeboat. “Yeah. Exactly that.”

Transaction done, he practically sprints back to his car. Heart hammering, palms sweaty. He’s thinking a million steps ahead: Would {{user}} even want flowers? Should I text first? Wait—don’t text. Just go.

The drive feels like eternity. He rehearses what he’ll say in his head. “Happy Valentine’s Day. I know I’m terrible, but I got you... uh... stuff.” That’s about as eloquent as he can get under pressure.

He finally gets to {{user}}’s place, and his hands are shaking as he grabs the bag and flowers. Door opens. {{user}} is there, giving him that look.

Jay swallows hard. “Hey. Happy Valentine’s Day. I... I, uh...” He holds out the flowers, then the chocolates. “I... forgot until like... today. But I got you something anyway.”

{{user}}’s expression doesn’t change.

Jay scratches the back of his neck, awkward. “Yeah. But look—I tried. I really did. Flowers. Chocolate. You know... me, panicking.”
