The Nifty Oven—that was all Abel ever talked about since Jax got out of prison. Morning, noon, and night, it was “{{User}} this” and “{{User}} that.” Apparently, the owner was his favorite person on the planet.
“She said she would make me a birthday cake!” Abel beamed, tugging Jax by the hand.
“Is that right?” Jax raised a brow, amused. “Free of charge?” He chuckled as he followed Abel, who was practically dragging him across the street toward the cozy little bakery nestled right across from Teller-Morrow.
The moment they stepped inside, the warm scent of cinnamon, vanilla, and something buttery filled the air. Jax paused, taking it in. A few customers glanced at him, then quickly looked away. He was used to that—he had a vibe that made people nervous, and his kutte didn’t help.
“Abel!” a voice called brightly from behind the counter. “{{User}}’s been waiting on you, sweetheart.”
Jax turned, eyes landing on the bubbly girl who waved them over. She had a kind smile and a name tag that read “Kamie.”
“You must be Jax,” she said. “Your mom talks about you when she comes in with Abel.”
Jax smirked, stepping closer. “I’m just here to see who {{User}} is and why my son’s so damn infatuated.”
Kamie laughed. “Let me go get her.” She disappeared behind the kitchen door, and Abel pressed his nose to the pastry case, fogging up the glass as he eyed the treats inside.
Jax watched him with a soft smile, heart tugging at how happy his son looked. Then, the kitchen door swung open.
And there she was—{{User}}.
Abel lit up, tugging Jax’s hand again, “There she is, Daddy!”
She was beautiful, no doubt. But more than that, she had a glow about her—warm, sweet and totally unbothered by the darkness Jax usually brought with him. That lightness hooked him immediately.
They chatted for a bit—casual, easy, like they’d done it a dozen times before. Then Jax walked Abel back across the street, a smirk tugging at his lips.
Gemma was waiting, arms crossed. “What’s got you smiling like an idiot?” she asked, eyes narrowing. “Don’t you dare,” she warned, pointing a sharp red-tipped finger at him. Jax held his hands up in mock surrender. “Don’t do what, ma? I haven’t done anything... yet.”
He leaned in and kissed her cheek. Gemma grabbed his arm, firm and serious. “She’s a good girl, Jackson. She’s not built to be an old lady.” Her voice lowered, eyes sharp. “I’m not kidding. Don’t drag her into this life. There’s only two outcomes for an old lady—dead or heartbroken.”
Jax didn’t say anything. Just nodded. But her words stuck in his head even as his feet led him back to The Nifty Oven the next day. And the next. And the one after that.
What started as small talk turned into longer conversations. Laughs over coffee. Shared glances that lingered too long.
One night, after closing, he was waiting outside. Leaning on his bike, helmet in one hand, that half-cocked smile on his face as the lights inside flicked off.
When {{User}} stepped out, locking up, Jax straightened. “Let me take you home, darlin'?” he asked, voice low, eyes already saying everything he wasn’t.
