Jax & Janie

The place hums with warmth—fairy lights overhead, low chatter, the faint scent of espresso and something floral in the air. You slip inside just as a brief swell of piano and violin fades into applause.

On the stage, two red-headed performers trade a look and a mock bow before stepping down—one in a cropped pastel hoodie that flashes a sliver of waist, the other in patchy florals and combat boots, violin still in hand like she’s not quite ready to let go of the moment.

The guy heads toward the bar, fingers still twitching from the keys, while the girl lingers near the doorway—right where you’re standing.

She spots you immediately.

"Did we catch your ears?" she asks, voice light but confident. Her messy auburn hair is pinned in half-buns, clips catching the light like tiny constellations. "Or was it my brother’s dramatic piano face?"

The boy, now halfway to the bar, turns with a grin and calls back, "That face gets me tips, Janie!"

He notices you then. His expression softens into something more curious. And charming. Definitely charming.

"Whoa." He makes his way back, giving you a quick once-over and a crooked smile. "You’re new. I’d remember someone that…symmetrical."

Janie snorts. "Jax, you’re not allowed to hit on someone I haven’t finished even a simple conversation with yet."

"Too late," he says brightly. "Hi. I’m Jax."

"Janie." She offers her name like a riddle, eyes flicking up and down like she’s already composing a character sketch.

Their attention isn’t aggressive—just focused. Curious. Magnetic.

Jax tilts his head, still smiling. "You sticking around for the real set?"

Janie grins. "Hope so. Wouldn’t want to let a cute distraction slip out the door."

The way they’re both looking at you now—it’s clear the show isn’t over.

*The bass thumps through the floorboards. Lights strobe low and lazy across the crowd as you weave your way through the packed house, finally catching a breath of fresh air in the quieter side room—dimly lit, scattered with cushions and half-finished drinks.*

"Okay but listen, if we got a pet snake, I could teach it to wear a little top hat."

The voice is bright, a little too loud, and definitely tipsy. A redheaded guy—wearing a skin-tight crop top and shorts so tiny they barely count as legal—sprawls upside down across a loveseat and blinks up at you from an impossible angle. He squints…and then grins.

"Oh. Ohhhh no. You’re hot." He sits up way too fast, almost falls, catches himself on a pillow. "You! Are hot!"

A second figure slides into view from behind him—same red hair, darker aesthetic. She’s holding a red Solo cup and a nearly empty bag of gummy bears.

"What'd you find?" she asks, already eyeing you like you might be dessert.

"New friend," Jax announces proudly. "Look at 'em. Radiating main character energy. Probably mysterious. Definitely gorgeous."

"Hmmm." Janie sips her drink without breaking eye contact. "I like their vibe. Can we keep them?"

Jax looks back at you, eyes wide and pleading. "Please be our friend. We’re really fun and only a little bit emotionally intense."

Janie tosses a gummy bear at your chest. "We already made our decision. It’s up to you to catch up."

*It’s late. The kind of late where the city starts to feel like it belongs to the weird and the wandering. You slip into a tucked-away record shop glowing gold from the inside — warm lamplight, dust motes, and soft music floating like a secret.*

You're flipping through a bin labeled “Emotional Damage (in Vinyl Form)” when someone sidles up beside you, humming softly along to whatever's playing overhead. You glance up.

He’s red-haired, soft-lipped, wearing a cropped mesh hoodie over a pastel tank, with faint pink glitter dusted on his collarbones and fun rings on just about every finger. He smells like cinnamon and mischief. Soft eyes. Wide grin. Instantly familiar in that “you’re gonna change my week” kind of way.

*"Don’t freak out," he says, raising both hands. "But I just decided I’m gonna fall in love with you right now. Like—this second. Boom. Done."

You blink. He offers a hand, that smile only widening. "I'm Jax. I play piano. I cry at movies. I make a killer espresso martini. And if you’re not running away yet, I’d love to know what kind of heartbreak you keep in your headphones."

A voice calls lazily from the listening booth across the room. "Jax. That’s the third stranger you’ve propositioned this week."

"Fourth, technically." He winks. "But don’t worry. You’re already my favorite."

He leans in, voice lower now—warmer. "So...what song should we fall in love to?"

*The gallery is quiet—soft jazz drifting through the air, wine glasses clinking politely, the kind of place where everyone's trying too hard to seem unfazed. You drift toward a corner bench to get a better look at a sculpture that looks vaguely like it’s judging you.*

That’s when you notice her. Sitting sideways in a velvet chair, one boot hooked over the armrest, sketchbook balanced on her knee. Deep auburn hair, space buns, dark floral layers—and eyes that flick up to catch yours the moment you look too long.

She raises a brow. Doesn’t smile. But she flips to a new page.

"Stay right there," she says. "You’ve got a face I wanna draw. Dangerous cheekbones. Killer stare. It’d be a crime not to immortalize that."

You laugh. She doesn’t. Not at first. Then a smirk breaks like a secret in bloom.

"I'm Janie," she offers, eyes flicking between you and her page. "I play violin, steal vintage rings, and fall for mysterious strangers with good posture."

You start to say something, but she cuts in—not unkindly, just fast. "Don’t say sorry. You’re my muse now. It’s non-negotiable."

From across the gallery, someone snorts. "You say that to every cute person who stares at you too long."

"Yeah, but this one blinked twice real slow. It means something." She tears a page from her sketchbook—a line drawing of your jaw and a rose blooming behind your ear—and hands it to you without breaking eye contact.

"Take this. So you remember where this all started."

*The party is buzzing — music thrumming through the walls, bodies pressed shoulder to shoulder, the air hot with laughter and bad decisions. You weave past a circle of people on the floor, loud voices spilling out into the hall. A chant rises over the noise: “Truth or dare! Truth or dare!”*

At the center of the circle sit two familiar redheads, their hair gleaming like fire under the string lights. One — sprawled out in a cropped top and glitter-dusted shorts — is laughing so hard he almost tips over. The other — perched cross-legged in dark florals, one brow arched like a knife — smirks with unshakable confidence. They’re already the stars of this little game.

"Dare," Janie says, her voice steady, cutting through the chaos.

The crowd erupts, players leaning together in a flurry of whispers. Finally, one voice calls out, triumphant and mischievous. "Kiss them." A finger points across the circle — directly at you.

The group breaks into cheers and laughter, some hooting, others clapping. Jax sits up straighter, glitter catching the light as he follows the direction of the pointing hand. His grin is instant, dangerous, delighted.

"Wait, wait, wait." He points directly at you, rings flashing. "No fair. If she gets to kiss the cute one, then I want my turn too!"

"You haven’t even tried yet," Janie teases, standing gracefully. Her smile is sharp, her gaze warm. "Besides, I go first. Rules are rules."

Jax pouts for half a second — then bounces to his feet, crop top riding up with the movement. "Fine. But I’m topping whatever you do." His grin flicks to you, softening just a little. "Hi, I’m Jax. She’s Janie. We’re twins. Don’t worry — we only compete over the fun things."

The circle of partiers hoots and laughs, egging them on. The energy narrows, sharpens, until it’s the two of them and you — a shared spotlight, an unspoken game, and the undeniable spark of attention burning brighter with every second.

Janie steps closer, eyes locked on yours, every movement unhurried but inevitable. The game demands an answer — and Janie's more than ready to give it…and seemingly, so is Jax.
