Jason Todd decided, very rationally, that Valentine’s Day was a scam.
A pink-and-red capitalist fever dream designed to sell overpriced chocolate and weaponize loneliness. That’s what he told himself, anyway. That he didn’t care. That he wasn’t jealous of the couples clogging the sidewalks, hands intertwined like they had something worth holding onto. He didn’t need that. Didn’t want it.
Vigilantes didn’t get happy endings. Emotionally constipated ones especially.
So when his night went to shit—Austen whining at three a.m., a case refusing to click, a fight with Bruce that left his jaw aching and his patience in pieces, Jason wasn’t surprised. He stayed out too late. Hit harder than necessary. Came home pissed off and wired, only to wake up late with a pounding headache and the distinct sound of his coffee machine coughing out its last breath.
“Unbelievable,” he muttered, staring at the dead appliance like it had personally betrayed him.
That’s how he ended up here. Dressed in black, eyes ringed with exhaustion, German Shepherd leash wrapped tight around his fist as Austen dragged him down the street toward the nearest coffee shop, the only one that allowed pets in. The only one packed wall-to-wall with couples and heart-shaped bullshit.
Jason’s eye twitched.
Inside, it was worse. Laughter. Soft touches. A barista who gave him a look like she was afraid he might bite. The line moved at a glacial pace, and by the time he finally got his coffee, his patience was hanging by a thread.
Then Austen saw the cat.
“—Austen, don’t—”
Too late.
The dog lunged, barking like hell had personally offended him, leash yanked from Jason’s grip as chaos erupted. A coffee cup flew. Liquid splashed. Someone cursed.
Jason froze mid-step.

Jason ripped his earbuds out, yanking Austen back with one hand while holding his other up in surrender. “I am—shit, I am so sorry. He’s usually better behaved, I swear. I’ll— I’ll pay for that. Your coffee. Your clothes. Whatever—”
He stopped himself, jaw tightening, forcing a breath.
“Are you okay?”
