The rain had started halfway through dinner.
By the time {{user}} made it back toward the cabins, Camp Jupiter was practically drenched. Campers were hurrying under awnings, complaining about the weather while thunder rumbled somewhere beyond the hills.
{{user}} was halfway to their cabin when they spotted Jason.
He was standing beneath the roof of the armory.
Alone.
And holding an umbrella.
{{user}} stopped.
Jason looked… ridiculous.
Not actually ridiculous.
Just cute.
He was holding the umbrella over a tiny, shivering puppy.
{{user}} stared.
Jason noticed them.
His expression immediately changed.
“Don’t.”
{{user}} hadn't even said anything.
They slowly walked closer.
“I didn't say anything.”
“You were about to.”
{{user}} looked at the puppy.
Then Jason.
Then the puppy again.
Jason sighed.
“It was under the stairs.”
“Oh my gods.”
“Don't.”
“You rescued a puppy.”
“It was raining.”
“You’re holding an umbrella over it.”
“Obviously.”
“You’re getting soaked.”
“I’m fine.”
{{user}} looked at Jason.
His hair was damp. His shirt was beginning to cling to his shoulders from the rain, and one side of him was completely outside the umbrella because he'd apparently decided that the puppy deserved the entire thing.
{{user}} folded their arms.
“Jason.”
“What?”
“You’re ridiculously cute.”
Jason closed his eyes.
“Please don't start.”
“You're literally sacrificing yourself to keep a puppy dry.”
“I’m not sacrificing myself.”
“You're soaked.”
“I said I'm fine.”
The puppy gave a tiny sneeze.
Jason immediately looked down.
“Hey, hey. You're okay.”
{{user}}'s expression softened.
Jason crouched slightly, angling the umbrella lower.
“It's okay,” he murmured. “You're safe.”
{{user}} pressed their lips together.
Jason glanced up.
He immediately caught the expression on their face.
“No.”
{{user}} grinned.
“You're using your gentle voice.”
Jason looked horrified.
“I do not have a gentle voice.”
“You absolutely do.”
“I don't.”
“You do with animals.”
“I’m talking normally.”
“Jason, you sound like you're talking to a baby.”
“Because it’s a puppy!”
{{user}} laughed.
Jason tried to look annoyed, but the puppy chose that exact moment to put its tiny paws against his leg.
Jason's entire expression melted.
“Oh, come on…”
{{user}} pointed at him.
“THERE!”
Jason looked up sharply.
“Stop.”
“You did the face!”
“What face?”
“The soft face!”
“I don't have a soft face.”
“You absolutely have a soft face.”
The puppy made another tiny noise.
Jason immediately looked down again.
{{user}} gasped dramatically.
“Oh, this is incredible.”
Jason frowned. “What?”
“You're pretending to be all tough and important, but one tiny puppy comes along and you're completely finished.”
“I am not.”
The puppy leaned against his leg.
Jason gently scratched behind its ear.
{{user}} stared.
Jason looked up.
They stared at each other.
“Don't.”
“Jason.”
“Don't say it.”
“You're adorable.”
Jason's face went pink.
{{user}} immediately smiled triumphantly.
“There it is.”
“I'm leaving.”
“With the puppy?”
Jason looked down.
The puppy looked up at him.
He hesitated.
{{user}} raised an eyebrow.
Jason sighed.
“…Obviously with the puppy.”
“Thought so.”
They started walking toward the infirmary together, {{user}} holding the umbrella this time while Jason carefully carried the puppy.
For a while, neither of them said anything.
Then {{user}} glanced sideways.
Jason was staring down at the puppy with the most ridiculously fond expression.
{{user}} smiled.
Jason noticed.
“Don't.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“You're thinking something.”
“Maybe.”
“{{user}}.”
{{user}} leaned slightly closer.
“I think you like being a hero.”
Jason gave them a skeptical look.
“That's what you got from this?”
“No.”
{{user}} looked at the puppy.
Then back at Jason.
“I think you like being needed.”
Jason went quiet.
His expression softened.
“Maybe.”
{{user}} smiled.
Jason looked down again and adjusted the puppy carefully in his arms.
Then, after a moment, he added:
“Don't tell anyone.”
{{user}} laughed.
“Your secret's safe with me.”
A beat.
“…Mostly.”
Jason groaned.
“{{user}}.”
“What? I have to have some fun.”
And despite his complaints, Jason was smiling all the way to the infirmary.
