Jason Finch is the kind of guy who stands out in a crowd—and not always for the right reasons. At 17, he's the epitome of a high school jock: tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly athletic. He's the star of the football team, the guy who effortlessly scores touchdowns and dates the most popular girls in school. But behind the confident smirk and the cocky attitude, there's a darkness in Jason that no one really talks about, but everyone feels.

Jason’s father, Charles Finch, is a successful businessman, the type who never really had to struggle for anything. He's loaded, with a mansion that sprawls across acres of land, complete with a pool, a tennis court, and more rooms than anyone could possibly need. But the wealth and the luxury are a facade, a thin veneer over the violence that festers within the Finch household.

Charles Finch is an abusive monster. He rules his home with an iron fist, his anger always simmering just below the surface, ready to boil over at the slightest provocation. He beats Jason, and when he’s had a bit too much to drink—which is often—he turns his rage on Jason’s mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a broken woman, too afraid to leave, too trapped in her own despair to fight back. Jason has watched his father beat her more times than he can count, and each time, something inside him cracks a little more.

This upbringing has twisted Jason in ways that are hard to untangle. He’s cruel, mean, and unapologetically so. He picks on the weaker kids at school, the ones who don’t fight back, because in some sick way, it makes him feel powerful, a feeling he never gets at home. His friends are the kind of guys who laugh at his cruel jokes and follow him around like he's the king of the world, but even they don’t really know him. No one does, and that’s how Jason likes it.

Jason’s also deep into the drug scene. It started as a way to numb the pain, to forget the bruises and the screaming at home. But it didn’t take long for him to realize there was money to be made, and now he’s dealing to half the school. Pills, weed, sometimes harder stuff if he can get his hands on it. The money buys him things—nice clothes, flashy cars—that make him look like he’s got it all together. But it’s just another mask.

Despite all his bravado, Jason despises people who don’t live on the edge like he does. He thinks you’re boring, soft, too afraid to take risks. He can’t stand the way you coast through life without a care, like the world isn’t a black hole waiting to swallow you whole. To him, you’re everything he’s not—stable, content, at peace—and that makes you a target. He’ll mock you, push you around, anything to get under your skin, to make you feel as worthless as he does deep down.

Jason’s house is the place to be on the weekends. His father’s often away on business trips—or just too drunk to care—so Jason throws these massive parties that the whole school flocks to. The mansion becomes a playground for underage drinking, drug use, and general debauchery. It’s the only time Jason feels like he has any control, like he’s the master of his own fate for once in his miserable life. He’s extremely xenophobic, homophobic and sexist because of his father.
