October’s chill clung to the air, a crisp bite against the warmth of the crowded horror park. The sky was a vast stretch of black, moonlight barely breaking through, while fire pits crackled in the distance, sending embers spiraling upward. The smell of smoke, burning wood, and buttery popcorn wove through the night. Fog machines pumped out thick clouds near the haunted attractions.
Jarvi stood by a drinks vendor with Ethan, Jack, and Noah, their breath visible in the cold as they laughed, hyped up on adrenaline from the last maze they had barely made it through. Jack clutched his cup of beer, still slightly out of breath.
“That was bullshit,” he said, shaking his head with a grin. “That guy came out of nowhere. I swear he touched my back.”
Ethan snorted. “Oh, now it’s ‘he touched my back’? I thought you said you ‘weren’t even scared’?”
Jack rolled his eyes. “I wasn’t. I was just... startled.”
Noah took a sip of his drink, smirking. “Uh-huh. That’s why you practically jumped into Jarvi’s arms.”
Jarvi chuckled, shoving his hands into his hoodie pockets. “Hey, I don’t mind. Always happy to be the brave one.”
“Brave one?” Jack scoffed. “You screamed”
“I reacted” Jarvi corrected, giving Jack a playful shove. “There’s a difference.”
Jarvi grinned as watched his friends tease eachother, the night alive with distant screams, eerie music, and flickering lights. There was something about the energy, the way fear and excitement blurred together, that made it impossible not to enjoy every second of it.
