Lore of the Edo Era in Japan:
- Social Hierarchy: The structure of society was rigidly classified, from the lowest to the highest: Slaves, Merchants, Craftsmen, Farmers (one of the pillars of society), Peasants, Samurai, Daimyo, Shogun, Court Nobility, and Emperor.
- Political Structure: The Tokugawa shogunate ruled Japan, with power distributed through a system of domains governed by daimyo, or local lords. To keep control over these lords, the shogunate enforced the sankin-kōtai system, which required daimyo to split their time between their own territories and Edo Kyoto, ensuring their loyalty and limiting their ability to rebel.
- Political Powers: The imperial family held no real power, as the shogunate controlled the government. However, the emperor retained symbolic authority, able to bestow titles and confer political legitimacy.
- Society: The society of the Edo period followed a strict hierarchy, with the samurai at the top, followed by peasants, artisans, and merchants. This era was characterized by relative peace and stability, allowing culture and the arts to flourish. Urbanization expanded, and eating out became popular, with food stalls offering fast food options like sushi, tempura, and soba, as well as upscale dining.
- Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu): This highly ritualized practice of preparing and drinking tea became an integral part of Edo culture, reflecting Zen Buddhist principles of harmony and tranquility.
- Bushido: The samurai code of conduct, emphasizing honor, loyalty, and frugality, was formalized and strictly adhered to during this era.
- Ukiyo-e: Woodblock printing became an important art form, depicting everyday life, landscapes, and scenes of leisure.
- Kabuki Theater: Known for its extravagant costumes, makeup, and dramatic storytelling, Kabuki became a highly popular form of entertainment.
- Crime and Punishment: Crimes like theft, arson, and murder were met with harsh punishments, often including the death penalty. Insulting an official or covering up adultery could also result in execution. Even minor offenses, such as evading checkpoints or disrespecting parents, could be punishable by death. Internal conflict was common, and the penal system reflected the strict hierarchies and rigid social order of the time.
- Daily Life: Common aspects of life during the Edo period included the presence of brothels, theft, sumo wrestling, enslavement (mostly of women and children), frequent wars, bandit attacks, and a strong sense of male superiority over women. Drinking sake and dealing with internal and external conflicts were also typical experiences, Bandit will kill men and rape woman enslave woman and children selling them at auction.

Setting
- Time Period: Edo Era. (Years 1603-1868).
- World Details: In Japan's Edo period, corruption ran rampant through society. Criminal activity flourished, and foreign merchants from China and the Dutch East India Company flooded into the country, exploiting the growing market. These merchants introduced enslaved labor and fueled conflicts, driving wars between factions. Drugs, smuggled in by foreign traders, caused addiction to spread like wildfire, further destabilizing society.
- Major Cities: The major cities of Japan—Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Kyoto, Osaka, Sawara, Takayama, Nara, and Nagoya—were vibrant yet deeply corrupt. These cities were sprawling and full of life, with bustling streets lined with wooden buildings. While most structures were built from raw timber, a few wealthier districts contained stone buildings, but even these were rare.
- Red-Light District: Brothels flourished, with geishas becoming increasingly popular as both entertainers and prostitutes. Though originally trained in music, dance, and the arts, many geishas became involved in the sex trade to cater to the insatiable appetites of the city’s powerful elite and foreign visitors. The demand for pleasure and luxury turned the brothels into one of the most profitable enterprises of the time.
- Environment: The combination of widespread corruption, drug abuse, and exploitation created an atmosphere of decay, though the cities were alive with activity, from merchants haggling over goods to samurai enforcing or disregarding the laws, depending on the bribes they received. Beneath the veneer of prosperity and culture, the Edo period was a time of darkness for many. There are ninjas who live in the forest, hiding as well, and they are the enemy of the Shogun, and even try to assassinate the royal family and make an end to the Edo Era and the shogunate.
- Country: Japan.

It was a bright, sunny day in Kyoto, the bustling capital of Japan, where life thrived on every street corner. Despite the city's charm, beneath the surface lay a darker reality. Kyoto had become a hub for corruption, attracting merchants and visitors not just for its historical beauty, but for more sinister reasons. Hidden within the city were secret marketplaces where illicit drugs flowed freely, and where underground auctions trafficked in human lives—an infamous trade of slavery.
These operations were protected by powerful individuals with deep ties to the nobility, their authority making them untouchable. Even the brave dared not stand against them, for these figures commanded fear and respect alike. Their reach extended far beyond the common folk, and their influence was as corrupting as it was pervasive.
What was once a city of elegance and culture had also become infamous for its flourishing brothels, where men could indulge their basest desires. These establishments were scattered across the city, catering to visitors seeking more than just history and tradition. Here, the line between pleasure and exploitation blurred, adding to the shadows cast upon this once-lovely city.
