The furniture was mismatched, the floorboards creaked near the entrance, and the handwritten menu behind the counter hadn't been updated in years. An old radio played whatever station the employees happened to prefer, occasionally interrupted by the grinding of the espresso machine.

The coffee, however, was excellent.

And more importantly, nobody seemed particularly interested in bothering anyone.

Which was precisely why Janus Malf liked the place.

"You're late."

Janus glanced at his wristwatch before looking up at the elderly woman standing behind the counter.

"Good morning to you too, Margaret."

"Don't 'good morning' me. You usually come in before nine."

"How touching. I wasn't aware you were keeping track of my movements."

"Hard not to notice when a walking refrigerator takes up my biggest chair every Thursday."

A low chuckle escaped the German Shepherd.

"Your hospitality remains unparalleled."

"Coffee?"

"Please."

"Black?"

"Unless you've decided to poison me with sugar."

Margaret snorted.

"One of these days, I'm putting whipped cream in it."

"Then one of these days, you'll be looking for a new customer."

"Promises, promises."

She disappeared behind the counter.

Janus shook his head, the corner of his muzzle lifting as he made his way toward his usual table.

At fifty, the towering German Shepherd was a difficult figure to overlook. Seven feet tall, broad-shouldered, and built like someone who had spent several decades arguing with increasingly heavy barbells, he looked absurdly out of place among the little shop's delicate wooden chairs.

Today, however, there was nothing particularly extravagant about his appearance.

A dark olive-green shirt, sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms. Black trousers. A worn brown leather jacket draped over one arm. His chocolate-brown fur was carefully groomed, though silver-gray had begun claiming the edges of his muzzle and temples. Two silver hoops decorated his right ear, while an old scar ran across his right cheek.

No tailored Italian suit.

No entourage.

Not even the expensive watch he usually wore to business meetings.

Just a man who wanted a decent cup of coffee.

His phone vibrated.

CLYDE — 3 MISSED CALLS

Janus stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

CLYDE: Boss, the new equipment supplier is here.

Then another.

CLYDE: He brought the wrong machines. Again.

And finally:

CLYDE: I'm going to start charging these people for emotional damages.

Janus exhaled through his nose.

He typed a reply.

JANUS: Tell him to take them back.

A response arrived almost immediately.

CLYDE: That's it?

JANUS: Would you prefer I compose a poem?

CLYDE: You're in a good mood today. Disgusting.

Janus silenced the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

For the next hour, Malf's Luxury Fitness Club could survive without its owner.

Probably.

He settled into the chair beside the window, stretching his long legs beneath the table with some difficulty.

The chair gave a faint, protesting creak.

Janus looked down.

"Don't start."

It creaked again.

He sighed.

"Every bloody week."

From behind the counter, Margaret called out without looking.

"Break it, you buy it!"

"Send me the invoice."

"You said that about the last one!"

"And I paid for it."

"After complaining for twenty minutes!"

"It was a very poorly constructed chair."

Margaret laughed.

Janus shook his head and opened the newspaper someone had abandoned on the table.

He liked this arrangement.

At the gym, people recognized him before he entered a room. Clients wanted photographs, aspiring bodybuilders wanted advice, and businessmen wanted favors disguised as friendly conversations.

Here, Margaret occasionally insulted him, the furniture threatened to collapse beneath him, and nobody expected anything more than payment for his coffee.

It was refreshing.

And there were other reasons he valued places like this.

A man could learn a great deal about a city by sitting quietly and listening.

The conversations were ordinary. Someone complained about their landlord. Two students argued over an examination. A delivery driver described a spectacularly unfortunate encounter with a parking officer.

Janus listened without appearing to.

Nothing important.

Nothing requiring his attention.

For once, that was a good thing.

"Here."

Margaret placed a large ceramic mug before him.

"Freshly brewed. And don't complain about the temperature."

Janus lifted the cup, inhaling the familiar bitterness.

"Margaret, my dear, if you ever learned to accept constructive criticism, you'd be unstoppable."

"If you ever learned to shut up, I'd retire happy."

He chuckled.

"Fair enough."

She returned to the counter, leaving him with his coffee and newspaper.

Several minutes passed.

Outside, pedestrians hurried along the pavement while the occasional car splashed through puddles left by an earlier shower. The sky remained overcast, casting a soft gray light through the café windows.

Janus turned a page.

Then the bell above the entrance rang.

He barely looked up at first.

Customers came and went. There was nothing unusual about that.

But as the morning continued, his attention eventually settled on an unfamiliar face nearby.

He couldn't recall seeing this particular individual during his previous visits.

Not that he expected to recognize everyone who entered the shop.

Still, after years of dealing with clients, investors, employees, and an assortment of considerably less pleasant individuals, observing people had become something of a habit.

He returned to his newspaper.

A few moments later, Margaret emerged from behind the counter carrying a small plate.

"Janus, move your things. I need that extra space."

He looked up.

"Excuse me?"

"Your newspaper. Your jacket. All of it. You're occupying half the bloody table."

Janus glanced at the empty space opposite him.

"Margaret, I am a paying customer."

"Then act like one and stop treating the place like your private office."

"Such hostility."

"Such a big mouth."

She gave him an unimpressed look before turning toward the nearby customer.

"If you need somewhere to sit, there's room here. Don't mind him. He's mostly house-trained."

Janus slowly lowered his newspaper.

"Mostly?"

Margaret ignored him.

"Enjoy your morning!"

She walked away before he could respond.

For several seconds, Janus watched her retreat.

Then he gave a quiet, disbelieving chuckle.

"Remarkable woman. Absolutely no instinct for self-preservation."

He folded his newspaper and moved his jacket from the neighboring chair, clearing the space without making any assumption about whether the stranger intended to use it.

His golden eyes lifted toward the unfamiliar face.

"Well, you've heard the lady."

He gestured casually toward the vacant seat.

"You're welcome to it, if you'd like. I assure you, despite her rather colorful introduction, I don't bite."

A brief pause.

"Usually."

The corner of his muzzle curved with dry amusement.

"Janus, by the way."

He raised his coffee in a small greeting.

"And before you ask, yes, she's always like that."

His gaze drifted toward Margaret, who was already arguing cheerfully with another customer.

"Frankly, I think she enjoys having someone around who can't fit through the door quickly enough to escape."

He returned his attention to the stranger.

"So, what brings you to this little corner of the city? The coffee, the atmosphere..."

He glanced at the battered chair beneath him.

"...or the irresistible promise of furniture that might collapse at any moment?"
