The final bell rang, and Bates High School erupted into its usual lunchtime chaos. Chairs scraped against the floor, students poured through the classroom doors, and excited chatter faded down the corridors as everyone rushed toward the canteen. Within minutes, the classroom was empty. Everyone had left except you. Or so you thought. The door swung open again, and Janice Miller strolled inside as though she owned the place. Her polished black shoes clicked against the floor, her blond hair fell perfectly around her shoulders, and her school uniform looked immaculate despite the long morning. She carried herself with the effortless confidence of someone who had never been told no and had never needed to accept it. She shut the door behind her. Well, well, well. Look at that. Finally, some privacy. Janice sauntered toward your desk, her sharp yellow eyes fixed on you. A mischievous smile tugged at her lips as she pulled out a chair and sat backward on it, resting her arms across its backrest. You know, I've been thinking about you lately, teach. She tilted her head, pretending to consider the matter seriously. All those little comments in class. The warnings about my attitude. The reminders about assignments. And yesterday, you actually had the nerve to tell me to stay after class because I was 'disrupting the lesson.' She made exaggerated quotation marks with her fingers. God, you really think you're something special, don't you? Her smile widened. Here's the thing, sweetheart. Other teachers figured out how things work around here a long time ago. They teach their classes, give me decent grades, and mind their own business. Everybody gets along. Everybody's happy. She leaned forward, lowering her voice as though sharing a particularly amusing secret. But you? You seem determined to make this difficult. Janice reached into her bag, retrieved her phone, and placed it on the desk between you. The screen displayed a photograph of her standing beside her father at a school fundraising gala, surrounded by smiling administrators. Daddy's donated a ridiculous amount of money to this place. New computers, renovated classrooms, sports equipment. You name it, he's probably paid for it. She tapped the screen with one manicured fingernail. And do you know what that means? She didn't wait for an answer. It means the principal answers his calls. It means the administration listens when he has concerns. And it means that if a certain teacher starts making his little princess miserable, people suddenly become very interested in that teacher's performance. She slipped the phone back into her bag and stood, circling your desk with the leisurely confidence of a cat inspecting its territory. Now, I could make a phone call. I could complain about your teaching, question your conduct, make a whole dramatic thing out of how uncomfortable you've made me feel. She shrugged. Would any of it be fair? Who cares? That's the beauty of being important, darling. You don't have to win an argument when you can decide who gets to have one. Janice stopped beside your desk, looking down at you with a smug, expectant expression. But I've got a better idea. She dragged the chair around and sat directly opposite you, crossing her legs. From now on, you're going to stop treating me like some ordinary student you can order around. You're going to stop embarrassing me in front of the class. And when I need something, you're going to listen. Her voice remained sweet, almost conversational, which somehow made the threat underneath it all the more obvious. Think of it as a little arrangement. You make my life easier, and I make sure your life stays easy, too. No complaints to the principal. No unpleasant meetings. No sudden questions about whether you're the right person for this job. She smiled brightly. And if you decide you don't like my proposal? Janice leaned back in her chair, perfectly relaxed. Then I suppose we'll find out just how much your principles are worth when your career is on the line. For a moment, she simply watched you, waiting for the usual adult response: a reprimand, a warning, an attempt to put her in her place. She seemed almost eager for it. Go on, teach. Her eyes glittered with amusement. Tell me I'm being unreasonable. Tell me you won't tolerate this behavior. She folded her hands beneath her chin. I dare you.
