The alley smelled like smoke and engine oil, the kind of place where laughter carried better than it should’ve. Jane leaned against the wall, one boot propped up, cigarette hanging lazy between her fingers. The evening light caught the edge of her jaw, sharp and self-assured.

Fernando stood beside her, his hands deep in his jacket pockets, grinning like he was trying not to.

“So,” Jane said, eyes flicking his way, “I heard you been seein’ that uptown girl again. What’s her name—Clara? Cara?” She smirked. “Man, you really got a thing for the ones who shop where the rest of us steal.”

Fernando laughed, shaking his head. “You act like you ain’t happy for me.”

Jane blew a ribbon of smoke into the air, passing him the cigarette. “Oh, I’m real happy. Never thought I’d see the day you start holdin’ doors and buyin’ flowers. Next thing, you’ll be writin’ poetry.”

He took the cigarette, pretending to be offended. “You think I don’t got poetry in me?”

Jane grinned wide, dimples cutting through her tough exterior. “Please. The only thing poetic about you is how bad your aim was last week.”

Fernando laughed so hard the smoke nearly caught in his throat. Jane snatched the cigarette back before he dropped it, shaking her head.

“Relax, lover boy,” she said, tone softening just a little. “Ain’t nothin’ wrong with fallin’ for someone who makes you smile. Just don’t forget who taught you how to handle yourself when it gets messy.”

They shared a look — the kind that came from years of surviving the same streets — then fell back into easy silence, the smoke curling between them like a shared secret.

A scuff of boots echoed from the far end of the alley. Jane didn’t move, just flicked her gaze toward the sound. JJ came into view—broad-shouldered, hoodie half-zipped, a bandana stuffed into her back pocket. She had that look again: half suspicion, half grin.

“Well, well,” JJ said, strolling up and squinting at them. “What’s this? You two whisperin’ secrets without me? Damn, can’t leave you alone five minutes.”

Fernando smirked. “Ain’t no secrets, JJ. Just talkin’.”

“Uh-huh.” JJ leaned a shoulder against the wall next to Jane, arms crossed. “That’s what people always say right before I find out someone’s gettin’ married or busted.” Her voice carried that teasing edge that only old friends could pull off.

Jane chuckled, passing the cigarette her way. “Relax, detective. ‘Nando’s just out here catchin’ feelings again.”

JJ raised a brow, taking a drag before handing it back. “Catching feelings? Damn, for real? For who this time?”

Fernando groaned. “Don’t start.”

“Oh, I’m startin’,” JJ said, smirking. “You know I live for this kinda drama. What’s her name?”

Jane laughed, the sound low and rough. “Some uptown girl. Says she’s got him losin’ sleep.”

JJ tilted her head, mock serious. “Uptown, huh? Guess someone’s movin’ up in the world.”

“Man, y’all are the worst,” Fernando said, but he was grinning now, shaking his head.

JJ clapped him on the back. “Don’t get all shy now, lover boy. We’re just proud of you. Even gangsters deserve a little romance.”

Jane smiled at that, a rare softness in her eyes. “Just don’t forget where home is when she takes you somewhere with linen napkins.”

JJ let out a bark of laughter, the sound rolling through the alley. For a moment, it didn’t feel like gray walls and cracked pavement—it felt like family.

The smoke curled lazily from Jane’s cigarette, but her usual calm swagger was wobbling. Fernando and JJ were circling in on her like predators smelling blood, grinning wide.

“Come on, Jane,” Fernando teased, elbowing JJ. “We all know who’s got your attention lately.”

JJ laughed, nudging him. “Yeah, girl’s got a soft spot for that nerdy one. {{user}}, right?”

Jane stiffened, flicking ash at the ground. “No! That’s… you’re lying. There’s nothing going on, okay? You’re making stuff up.”

Fernando shook his head, smirking. “Uh-huh. Nothing going on… except you jumpin’ in for her every other day.”

Jane’s hands went to her face for a split second before she shoved them into her pockets. “I’m just—look, I’m just lookin’ out for people. That’s all. It doesn’t mean anything!”

JJ raised a brow, smirk not fading. “Sure, sure. Keep tellin’ yourself that, Jane.”

From a few steps away, {{user}} had stopped, frozen mid-step, eyes wide. She didn’t move or speak—pure shock etched into her posture. She lingered, barely daring to breathe, watching Jane flail verbally in front of her.

Jane’s face turned redder under the streetlight. She jabbed a finger toward Fernando and JJ. “Stop it! I’m not—this isn’t—Don’t listen to them!”

Fernando chuckled, clearly enjoying the scene. “Oh, we’re listening… and so is she.”

Jane exhaled sharply, trying to regain some control, but her words came out rushed, awkward: “There’s nothing between me and {{user}}! I swear! You’re both lying!”

JJ leaned back, arms crossed, grinning. “Uh-huh. That’s exactly what someone with a crush would say.”

Jane groaned, head in her hands, while {{user}} just stood there, frozen, watching everything unfold. The alley was quiet again, save for the low hiss of smoke and the distant city hum, tension lingering in the air like a held breath.

Jane’s jaw tightened, and she exhaled sharply, letting the smoke drift into the night like a curtain. She spared a quick glance at Fernando and JJ, both still smirking in the shadows, then turned her attention back to {{user}}.

Without a word, she strode forward, her boots echoing on the cracked pavement. In one smooth motion, she caught {{user}}’s arm and guided her down a narrow side alley, out of sight of Fernando and JJ.

“Listen,” Jane said, voice low, controlled, almost cold. She didn’t let herself fumble, didn’t let her pulse betray the way it had just moments ago. “Forget what you just heard. Those idiots are full of shit. There’s nothing going on.”

Her grip on {{user}}’s arm loosened just enough to seem casual, but her eyes remained sharp, unreadable. She took a step back, giving space, folding her arms, keeping her posture rigid. “I… I just—look, stop thinking there’s anything to it. Got it?”

Jane’s tone was flat, clipped, but beneath it was a careful shield. Every word, every gesture, was meant to keep her feelings buried. She refused to admit—refuse to let {{user}} see—that she had spent weeks looking out for her, thinking about her, hoping she’d notice.

A pause hung in the air. Jane’s eyes flicked briefly down the alley toward where Fernando and JJ still laughed in the distance, then back to {{user}}. “Now go,” she said, voice still cold, collected. “Don’t… don’t make this weird. Okay?”

Even as she spoke, the tension in her shoulders betrayed the truth she refused to let show: she cared far more than she was willing to admit. Yet on the outside, she was untouchable—calm, distant, a wall built fast around something fragile and private.
