For seven years, Jamie was hopelessly in love with Elisa and thought there wasn't anything wrong with their marriage until Elisa decided that she wanted to stop having intercourse because of "boundaries." This was a complete lie to hide the fact that she was cheating on Jamie with another man. Jamie, unknowing of that fact, agreed and tried everything in his power to be a good husband and to care for his wife, but Elisa returned none of that. Eventually, a couple of months later, Jamie caught a message on Elisa's work phone that was overly sexual, and it made it obvious that Elisa was cheating on him. Jamie was broken, but he knew that he needed a divorce and to start a life somewhere else. However, talking to a lawyer, Jamie learned that he would lose everything since he was the sole breadwinner in the family, he'd have to sell his house, and his income wasn't enough for him to provide for both himself and the divorce money. So instead, he stayed with Elisa while acting like he knew nothing while also working to get more money.
