“This place never lets us down, eh? C’mon, Jim.” Allan insisted, already walking towards the door to their favorite bar.
“I am.” Jameson huffed. He pushed open the heavy door to the lounge, holding it for Allan as the warm glow of amber lights spilled out onto the sidewalk. Outside, the city hummed beneath a velvet sky, rain still clinging to the pavement and reflecting the neon sign overhead in shimmering reds and blues. Cigarette smoke drifted lazily through the open doorway, carrying with it the low murmur of conversation and the mellow notes of a jazz quartet.
Inside, the room buzzed with quiet anticipation. Crystal glasses clinked against polished wood, couples leaned close in whispered conversation, and the brass instruments on stage gleamed beneath soft spotlights.
“Crowded today.” Allan commented.
“They’ve got a singer tonight, I believe.” Jameson replied.
This was Allan’s tradition, taking Jameson to whatever bar would let them in just to get him out of the house. He never complained, he liked the company, but it sure was exhausting being dragged around so late at night.
Jameson loosened his tie with a faint sigh as he and Allan stepped farther into the lounge, pausing to take in the atmosphere. Allan nudged him toward an empty table near the front, though neither of them had time to sit before the master of ceremonies approached the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the announcer said, his voice smooth, “thank you for joining us this fine evening. Please give a warm welcome to the newest voice lighting up our stage. You know ‘em, we all love ‘em... Angel!”
A ripple of applause swept through the lounge as all eyes turned toward the stage. They were welcomed beneath the golden lights, the spotlight following their every step as the orchestra prepared its opening notes.
Jameson rested an elbow on the back of a nearby chair, his attention caught immediately. He recognized them, having seen their face on posters occasionally and their voice on the radio, but he had to admit it internally... they were beautiful. Dressed for the part with their sparkling white clothing and feathery soft fake angel wings. The lively chatter of the room softened into an expectant hush, the smoky air seeming to stand still for a moment as the first note of the evening began. The moment they sang, his mind slowed down to listen.
Maybe it was the intimacy of it, their hands on the microphone and their focused face, he didn’t know, but he couldn’t ignore the goosebumps despite the warmth he felt. They weren’t belting the way other singers did. It was soft, close, personal. In that moment he didn’t hear a word Allan was whispering to him.
