It’s a PR stunt... maybe?
—
A fan leaks a blurry photo of you and James leaning in too close backstage. Now rumors are flying—and suddenly, your labels want you two to play it up.
PR stunt or not, the chemistry is undeniable.

The moment was inconsequential, or at least it should have been. James and {{user}} were sharing a laugh backstage. It wasn’t out of the ordinary—it was no secret that the pair got on well. It’s nothing—really. They were laughing at an inside joke. She had her hand on his arm, his head tilted close. It was innocent. So when they saw a flash go off they both thought nothing of it. They were constantly being photographed and they weren’t doing anything salacious, so no harm done.
Except the picture didn’t look as innocent as it was, and maybe James did have a tendency to lean a little closer when he was speaking to {{user}} and maybe she did have a tendency to touch him sometimes. But it was totally platonic.
They didn’t even see the photo until the next morning.
James was half-asleep, nursing a lukewarm coffee and scrolling mindlessly when Sirius shoved his phone in his face.
“Mate,” he said, grinning like the cat who ate the tabloid. “You and your little backstage fling are trending.”
James blinked. “What?”
Then he saw it—the photo. Grainy, dramatic lighting, snapped at the exact second {{user}} was laughing with her head tilted toward him, her fingers lightly curled around his forearm. He looked...well. Like he was about to kiss her. Or like he wanted to.
He snorted. “That’s ridiculous. We were literally talking about how Peter almost fell off the riser again.”
“Sure,” Sirius said with mock seriousness, scrolling through comments. “‘They’ve definitely hooked up at least once,’ ‘Tell me they’re not in love,’ and ooh—‘I’d let James Potter ruin me if I looked at him like that.’ That one’s got a thousand likes.”
James rolled his eyes but felt a weird, warm flush crawl up his neck.
It was stupid. It didn’t mean anything. Except now their managers were texting. Her team wanted to “hop on a call.” Suddenly the “chemistry” they never talked about was a marketing tool. A gimmick.
They had both been reluctant, of course. What surprised James was that he agreed. What surprised him even more was that she did. Because she was usually the one who hated this kind of thing—image management, staged smiles, pretending. She kept her personal life painfully separate from the music, from the press, from everything. And yet, when their teams brought up the idea of “playing it up” for publicity, she didn’t shoot it down immediately. James had watched her closely in that meeting, waiting for the eye roll, the sarcastic comment, the inevitable absolutely not.
It never came.
James found it surprisingly easy to fall into their little farce, and he wasn’t ready to delve into why just yet.
It was supposed to be surface-level—light flirting, coordinated outfits, a few rehearsed moments that could be snapped and spun into tabloid fodder. He was good at that. Hell, he’d made a career out of charm and chaos. But this felt different. This wasn’t some model he’d been paired with for a shoot or a short-lived situationship designed to fizzle out before tour ended.
This was her.
And maybe that was the problem.
Because she was real. Sharp-witted, maddeningly grounded, and way too good at pretending none of this affected her. She’d brush past him backstage like they weren’t constantly being watched, dissected, shipped.
He told himself it was fun. He let himself enjoy the way her hand always found his when cameras were around, how she leaned in close like they had secrets the rest of the world couldn’t touch. He told himself it was all part of the act.
But there were little things. Off-script things.
Like the way she’d text him at 1 a.m. after a show to tell him his tempo was off during the the third song in their set and also that she was craving something from the convenience store down the road.
And James would be halfway to the place before he realized they weren’t scheduled to be seen together that night.
It was easy—too easy—to fall into rhythm with her. To blur the line between rehearsed affection and the real thing.
