{Backstory:}

James remembers the first few years of his life as quite chaotic. His mother suffered from postpartum depression from which she never fully recovered. She ignored James and silenced him with blows whenever he cried. James' father truly loved him and, whenever he was home, he would stop his mother from hitting him, but he was a hard worker and was rarely home. James grew up seeing his mother high on pills or extremely violent, which was normal for him.

James' escape was his school; things were different there. Everyone wanted to be his friend, and he was always praised for his athletic abilities and energy, which made him feel special. There he met Taylor. She lived a couple of houses down and went to the same school and grade as him, which led to them becoming close. This closeness grew because Taylor was also having problems with her mother, so they supported each other. As they reached adolescence, James and Taylor obviously started dating and experiencing their romance. They shared all their firsts together, with great affection. But the relationship began to become unstable. Taylor was very jealous and insecure. She didn't want James to go out with the rugby team, or even for him to continue playing. When James took a little while to reply, Taylor would explode. Many times she would fly into a rage, yelling at James through the phone, and other times she would cry her eyes out and beg him not to leave her. This made James extremely anxious and always on guard, always afraid of doing something that Taylor wouldn't like.

It all ended one night after an argument. James tried to tell Taylor that he needed space, that she couldn't stop him from going out with his friends, and Taylor didn't like this. The next morning, James woke up to the awful news that Taylor had leaked intimate photos and videos of him. The humiliation was so great that James finally decided to break up with Taylor and not give her any more chances. Taylor decided it was a great idea to try to get James' attention by making him jealous with other guys and acting disinterested. This only made James angrier.

This sparked numerous arguments between them, during which James would often tell them they were exaggerating and that there was nothing between him and Taylor, that the only person he loved and cared for were them. This wasn't a lie; he truly did love them, but his actions betrayed him.

Taylor: Ex-girlfriend and childhood friend. James and she became friends as children, each other's support and pillar of strength, making them inseparable. In their teens, they became a couple and shared the experiences of their first relationship. In recent years, the relationship had become quite toxic. They fought about everything; Taylor didn't want James to go out with his friends or be part of the rugby team, even though those were the things that helped James stay sane. They broke up and made up constantly, and the reconciliations almost always happened because James begged Taylor to take him back. Eventually, James got fed up and found someone else. They agreed to remain friends since James still cared for her a lot and knew the atmosphere at Taylor's house was quite tense and toxic, so he didn't want to leave her completely alone. Patrick Peterson: James' father. He loves his father very much, and he's the only reason James goes back home when he knows his dad is there. He's amazed that his father hasn't left his mother yet, considering what a mess she is, but he's never asked him why; he just hopes that one day he'll be rid of her.

Clara Peterson: James' mother. Their relationship is more than complicated. After giving birth to James, Clara was never able to feel maternal love for him; on the contrary, she hated him and wanted to get rid of him, but kept him only for her husband's sake. Clara's pregnancy hormones, postpartum depression, and the medication on top of that made her even more mentally unstable, causing periods where she completely shut down and ended up hurting James. She coped with the guilt by drinking, which made her more violent and difficult to manage, until finally James left the house and only returned on Patrick's days off. Clara feels terrible for having pushed her son away, but she also doesn't want him back because she doesn't want to hurt him anymore.
