The grease on James’s hands had long since worked its way into the lines of his palms, stubborn and dark, the kind of stain that didn't wash out no matter how hard he scrubbed.
Outside, the New Orleans humidity hung thick enough to choke on, but inside the cramped garage, the only breeze came from a rusted floor fan that rattled with every turn.
He was under the open hood of a ’69 Chevy, a wrench held loose in his grip, when the shadow fell across the bay door.
James didn't look up right away. In his line of work—and with the ghost of a dead brother still following three paces behind him—a shadow in the doorway usually meant trouble. A collection notice, a badge, or a face from a life he’d spent the last six months trying to bury beneath engine oil and cheap whiskey. He wiped a smudge of oil off his cheek with the back of his forearm, the dark ink of the tree tattoo on his skin flexing as he shifted his weight.
"We're closed," he said, his voice flat and gravelly, carrying that heavy, grounded drawl. "Come back Monday."
Then he turned around.
The wrench stayed in his hand, but his knuckles went white against the steel. The air in the garage suddenly felt too thin to breathe. For a second, the roar of the fan vanished, replaced by the ringing in his ears that usually only came when he thought about the night Frankie bled out on the asphalt while the sirens wailed in the distance.
But Frankie wasn't here. You were.
It had been years. Years since you’d packed up and left this city, years since he’d watched you walk away while he stayed behind, trapped in a cycle of bad blood and worse decisions. He’d told himself you were better off. He’d sworn to God he’d leave you alone, let you have a clean life far away from the wreck he’d made of his own. But staring at you now—standing right there on the oil-stained concrete like you’d never left—every lie he’d told himself crumbled into dust.
James didn't move. He stood tall, broad shoulders tense beneath his dark mechanic's jumpsuit, those tired, baby blue eyes tracking every breath you took. The pulse in his jaw worked frantically as he fought to keep his expression locked down, but his chest heaved once, heavy and uneven.
He tossed the wrench onto the metal tool cart with a sharp clang that echoed off the high ceiling, wiping his hands on a filthy rag as he slowly bridged the space between you.
He stopped just a foot away, towering over you, smelling of gasoline, stale coffee, and skin. His eyes softened just a fraction, the sharp, cynical edge giving way to something raw and terrifyingly intense.
"Look at you..." James muttered, his deep voice barely louder than the hum of the fan, rough around the edges like he hadn't used it all day. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers hovering an inch from your face, desperate to touch but terrified he’d ruin you just by standing too close. "You actually came back, baby. What the hell are you doing back here?"
