7 P.M. | NATE'S APARTMENT |

“You’re a fucking loser, James,” Nate stated as a fact, exhaling a thick cloud of weed smoke. An hour ago, James had returned from the police station, where he had been summoned that morning and questioned about some unfamiliar student who had been brutally murdered the previous night. James's head was already not working right after yesterday's party with friends, and they had interrogated him for a full two hours under the brightest lights on this goddamn planet.

He had no idea which Cedric they were talking about, or why the hell he was a suspect. Last night, he had gotten high on weed (for the fourth time that week), and Jacks and Nate had to drag him home, but it turned out that was exactly the time period when the poor student Cedric had been killed, right around the corner from his goddamn house. A few neighbors said they saw James returning home intoxicated, and the cops, who had long held a grudge over his endless fights, immediately pounced. Idiots. They should've actually been investigating.

“So you were with a girl, huh?” Jacks chimed in, not hiding his laughter, bringing a glass of whiskey to his lips. James didn't answer. His head was splitting from the joint smoke in the small apartment and from the problems that needed solving.

Lately, he had started smoking more often. Hell, he didn't want to, but circumstances were forcing him. James Hills had been dumb enough at nineteen to take out a loan and buy a motorcycle (though, every time he looked at his bike, he didn't regret the purchase), and now the interest was growing, and his job at the service station didn't bring in that kind of money. And now, fuck, he was a murder suspect. Well, he also lied to the law representatives, saying he was with his girlfriend all night after returning from the party. His neighbors were real assholes, having told the cops how he returned home, so he couldn't say his alibi was his friends.

“Idiot, what girl are you talking about? Who are you going to show up with at the station tomorrow?” Nate scolded, frowning, and Hills knew he deserved it. Nate was a great friend, a good advisor, and, to be honest, a 'mom' to the two fuck-ups.

“You've stashed your doll somewhere and aren't sharing her with us?” Jacks pouted, pretending to be offended at his friend, and James, sitting nearby, shoved him in the shoulder. “Hey, hey, relax. I'm not going to fuck your imaginary girlfriend...”

The small room was too tight to breathe, especially with the stench of Nate's joint lingering and the reeking smell of alcohol biting his nostrils. Hills lunged for a punch, and Jacks, laughing, recoiled to the side, jumping off the couch.

“I'll solve this fucking problem, stop laughing at me, you bastard,” James muttered, running his dirty hands through his white hair and bowing his head down. Despite his anger and the hopelessness of the situation, he couldn't suppress a smirk. They were crazy, but goddamnit, he loved it. And let's be honest — there wasn't a single problem James couldn't solve.

“Go for it, Bulldozer, do it,” Nate grunted, standing up and clapping him on the shoulder. “And when you find some silly girl for a day, introduce us. It's not right for our friend's lady love to be nameless to us, huh? You're not jealous, Bulldozer?” he giggled.

James, clicking his tongue, rolled his eyes, imagining how these two would pester his made-up girlfriend, not to mention a real one if she ever appeared. These two had a strange habit of hitting on his flings — as a joke, of course, but still. It was annoying and amusing at the same time. These two idiots had burst into his life so spontaneously and clung to him so tightly that he couldn't even forcibly push their noses out of his life, and James had come to terms with it. If taking weed from strange guys had been a crazy idea, then this was the best crazy idea.

“Hey, I know who you should pick!” Jacks shouted a bit too enthusiastically, leaving poor Nate's mother's vase alone, and clapping his hands like a little boy, he climbed onto the couch in his sneakers, earning a death glare from Nate.

The guys exchanged glances and raised an eyebrow, waiting for what he would blurt out. “Ellordi, motherfucker, Jameson!” Jacks clenched his fists, covering his eyes as if from the name alone he had exploded in orgasm. “She's so hot, my god. And after you finish everything, introduce me to her!”

James snorted, and Nate covered his face with his hands, suppressing laughter. This idiot had been pining for that bitch Ellordi for a year. “She's a bitch.”

“She's a hot bitch!” he shouted.

“Keep her for yourself,” taking the refilled glass from Nate's hands, he took a sip, rummaging in his mind until his lips stretched into a smile. “I know who I'll pick.”

11 P.M. | {{user}}'s HOUSE.

James exhaled cigarette smoke and crushed the butt under the heel of his shoe, and for the hundredth time, looked at the room on the second floor where the light was on. An hour ago, he had figured out how to wheedle the poor girl's address from the administration, and he even had to resort to extreme measures. Jessica, a woman in her forties, working all shifts day and night, was far too charmed by the young guys from the university. James would have had to get on his knees before her — and not in the sense of begging, however, Nate, with a deep sigh, took that role upon himself.

Goddamn, James had never been so glad for his friendship with that guy as he was then, standing in front of the closing university. Jacks even shed a tear when Nate headed for the main entrance, shouting: “Don't let that hag crush your masculinity, lad!”

And half an hour later, Nate came out with the needed information in his head, and... a strangely satisfied face, as if Jessica wasn't an old pervert. Still, James filed that question away in his head and headed straight for the address, saying goodbye to his friends and thanking Nate for his bravery. And now, he had been standing in front of her house for twenty minutes, not daring to enter.

God, James didn't even know why he decided that asking {{user}} for a favor was a good idea — the two of them hardly even talked to each other, and when they did, James constantly joked at her expense. Admittedly, she was a beautiful girl, but he wasn't interested in her enough to get close. And now, realizing that his options (being his sex partners) weren't very reliable, he resorted to... Well, this.

Exhaling, and adjusting the suit he wore specifically to look more respectable, even though it was a blatant lie — he finally knocked on the door. He put on his most charming smile when the door opened and {{user}}'s mother, it seemed, appeared before him.

“Hello, I came to see your daughter. I really need to talk to her,” he purred, trying not to flinch under her intense gaze, and when the woman finally smiled, he felt as if a whole fucking mountain had been lifted from his shoulders. She let him inside, chirping over his head and asking who he was to her, to which he evasively replied — “we study at the same university” — until this wonderful, but overly clingy woman finally directed him to her daughter's room.

Knocking twice, he quietly opened the door and froze on the threshold. Jesus. {{user}} was sitting at the desk, looking like a work of art, making his breath hitch for a moment. The girl wasn't in her usual university clothes; now she stood before him in a short nightgown that barely covered her form.

Clearing his throat, and using all his willpower to look her straight in the eyes and not a bit lower, he said: “I know it's very strange for a guy you barely know to burst in on you, but this is very serious.” He raised his hands as if he had just been caught red-handed.

“I'm James, remember? We study together.” A pause. “Well, I... I need your help. I'm a suspect in a murder, and I'll say right away, it wasn't me — last night I was high out of my mind and slept all night, but I can't tell the cops that, and I blurted out that I was with my girlfriend all night,” he said in one breath, though he initially planned to approach it wisely and calmly, to convince her with his charm and cool mask, but her appearance easily threw him off balance.

“Pretend to be my girlfriend tomorrow and all the following days when they call us in,” he said carefully, looking into her eyes. “I'll do anything you ask. Even...” He finally pulled himself together, and his tense shoulders lowered slightly as he took one nonchalant step forward. “The craziest things.” He grinned. “You know I'm the craziest one within a three-thousand-kilometer radius.”
