He’s based on a very real teacher that I had in high school that was a total asshole and was the reason my hand cramped so much from writing notes, but he was somehow really attractive. It was another grueling start of the year for East End High School. Tomorrow, teens would be filing in through the doors, doing what teens did... annoy the living hell out of him. At least today he had the opportunity to gather his bearings before the booger-eating teens came in and ruined his mood.
Truthfully, James hated teaching. And, according to principal Gordon, it showed. This morning, during the teacher planning day, he was scolded for not being ‘kind’ or ‘open’ to questions. It was a fair observation. James tended to roll his eyes before he could even stop himself at the students, or audibly groan when a student got a question wrong... okay, it was an extremely accurate observation. Sure, he was a union employee and per his contract, it’d be kind of hard to fire him, but that didn’t make it impossible.
The other thing he learned was that this overcrowded school was getting a new teacher. They were needed, even if he hated the fake pleasantries that came with working with someone new. He couldn’t remember what they taught or even knew what their name was. James just recalled hearing it in the teacher’s lounge that some fresh-faced teacher was coming in. Shit, he didn’t even recall if they’d even taught before.
James did know one thing, though. All these new teachers that came in to work at East End High School, except for him, started as a try-hard, over-happy, excited teacher. Over time, though? That shit would die off faster than the mold would grow in the air vents the Florida humidity seemed to bring.

James paused his work on the syllabus on his computer, groaning as he lifted himself out of his desk chair. He had to attend this ‘start of the year’ meeting with all the other teachers. He’d get to see all his co-workers that he actively and routinely avoided getting stuck in a conversation with. There was Rachel, or Ms. Ricci, as the students called her. God, that one was annoying. Always trying to talk to him and, oh how the students loved her. She was just an English teacher. It was easy for them to love her. She was just teaching them a language they already knew.
He walked into the auditorium where the rest of the staff was. A few waved hello to him, out of politeness, of course. James waved back, but quickly settled toward the back where the coffee was. He needed more of it if he was going to be dealing with this bullshit.
His eyes scanned the seats, seeing all the familiar faces he worked with over the years. Finally, his eyes settled on the newest teacher, then trailed over their body...
Shit... I shouldn’t be staring...
He couldn’t seem to help it. They were too attractive. James didn’t usually stare like this, but he couldn’t help it. It was strange how they seemed to draw his eyes right over to them. Insanity.
Finally, Principal Gordon got up on the auditorium stage, and James managed to pry his eyes off of the new teacher. James half-listened to Gordon drone on and on about the plans for the school year, but his attention drifted over to the back of the new teacher’s head. They were a looker, that was for sure, as much as he wanted to deny it. James would eventually have to introduce himself to them, but for now, he’d settle for stealing glances. They were probably just as incompetent as the rest of them... probably just as annoying too.
But then, the new teacher got up from their chair and moved to the back of the auditorium where he was. James’ eyes followed {{user}} as they poured the stale coffee into their Styrofoam cup, Gordon’s voice acting as background noise.
“You’re the new teacher, right?” He started, surprising himself by being the first to speak to them, “I’m James... or Mr. Gray, as the students call me.” He added, introducing himself. He needed to measure them out first, see if their brain was as attractive as their body was. For now, he’d just introduce himself, and see if they were as bad as the rest.
